Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Hilary Hays Greenhalgh of Malvern

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Hilary Hays Greenhalgh. Check out our conversation below.

Hilary, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I am being called to change my business name and launch an entire rebrand. The reason for that is that Little Green House Interiors never felt like my “forever” name. I chose it because I work from my little green house, and I had a hard time selecting a name. Out of frustration I said, “I am about to just call myself Little Green House”, and so I did for the last three and a half years. The name has served me well, but I feel I have reached maximum growth under this name, and it is time to blaze bigger trails under a newer, more versatile and scalable name. There is something to the psychology of marketing, and the word “little” is holding me back. I am ready to spread my wings.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Hilary Hays Greenhalgh and I am a high-end interior designer. I work on large scale home renovations and new builds. My style is timeless, colorful, and patterned, and my design work is centered around families and how they function in the home. I think what makes me unique is the level in which I connect with and build relationships with my clients. It is always my intent to stay strictly professional, but I can’t help my nature to connect, and I end up becoming a part of my clients ongoing lives after we complete a project together. It is just who I am.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband. I was going through a major career change in my mid-twenties and I was pursing marketing. I saw myself as a high-level marketing executive and he always said he couldn’t see that for me. Not that he wasn’t supportive, because he always was, but he said he saw me as a designer of something – he just didn’t know what it was I was supposed to design.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There are still times I almost give up. My job can be extremely challenging at times, and it never stops testing me. There are times when I hit extreme lows that I think “why am I doing this to myself?”, but honestly the answer is that I just love it so much. I am of the opinion that every creative goes through the tumultuous high highs and low lows, I just think it is the nature of the business. Being creative in the world is not an easy thing to be.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
There are a lot of lies in the industry specifically around process and fee structure, but I think the biggest lie is that any one thing is a one size fits all. There are so many different creative processes when it comes to interior design, and there are infinite ways to structure the fees behind a design, but I think different things work best for each person and the only way to find the best fit for yourself is to test them out and go with your gut about what feels right to you.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I understand the stress behind the investments my clients are making. I have renovated every space I have every lived in, so I understand what it is like to live in construction, what it is like to spend every penny you have on a project, and I understand what it is like when unexpected costs come up. That is why client experience is my number one priority, and I do everything I possibly can to make their projects stress-free, enjoyable, exciting, and fun.
