Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Iman Rahman

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Iman Rahman. Check out our conversation below.

Iman , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
Recently I find I am wandering along. Sometimes I am walking but as life is unpredictable I lose my way sometimes. Or I happen upon a surprise waterfall, or a dead end, lots of ups and downs. Not a clear path but on the journey.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Iman (they/she) I am a person in their 20s who is discovering who she is as I’ve navigated a lot of illness and pain since high school and continue to. I am reconnecting with my creativity and learning how to adapt and create as my capacity and abilities continue to change. I am a lover of the arts, reading, writing, and dancing are some of the kinds I participate in myself.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I think before everything I was someone who was observing, enjoying life, taking in everything around me. Before I was told I was too shy, or too silly I was just comfortable seeing all the differences around me. Finding my place in it all. I feel like I’m making my way back to that more. I was always sure of myself before people told me not to be.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell myself to take it easy, that you’re allowed to make mistakes, and everyone does. I would tell myself you’re doing your best at the moment and that’s what matters. It’s normal to have worries everyone struggles soemtimes. you aren’t wrong for existing as you are.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
For the longest time I thought of myself as someone whose purpose was to help but now I’m recognizing how important it is to let people help me too. To know it’s important when I’m past my capacity to set boundaries to avoiding harming myself and others. I don’t think all I exist for is to help people anymore but I still want to. I need to care for myself as well. Not only first but at the same time. An ongoing thing I’m working on. I think there was a missing piece there before.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I think I’ve been trying to do what I was told to do my whole life until recently. I’m hoping I continue working towards what I was born to do, putting more attention and time into it when I’m able. Being around the people who make me feel good and recharge me. Creating art and spending time appreciating other artists of all kinds. Regardless of what it looks like to others I hope to continue to embrace my identity as I learn to accept what’s happening overtime in my life and make room for what feels right for me.
