We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jameel Oliviera. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Jameel, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Who are you learning from right now?
I am learning from my children. There are no guides on being the perfect parent. My sons Jasai (12) and Jace (10) are consistently teaching me. I’d say they are exact opposites so my approach with them has to be different. When I think back to being a child myself we didn’t live in a world where technology was the end all be all.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Jameel Oliviera. I am a husband celebrating 13 years of marriage this year and a father of 2 boys. By day I am an elementary school teacher in NJ. By night, day and all around the clock I am the owner of Bklyn Sole Apparel. What’s unique was I started the name in 2015 as a sneaker reseller but in 2020 during the corona virus pandemic I shifted my business. I went from a reseller of retro sneakers to creating my own clothing apparel. With such love for the sneaker culture I made the shift to create a brand that could mesh well with the retro kicks I once sold.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a dreamer a kid who thought he was Michael Jordan, ultimate warrior, a member of the Wu Tang Clan, Cliff Huxtable from the Cosby Show and many more.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
It taught me how to be a better person. Suffering showed me a picture of what I needed to be when I had full control of my destiny.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My village and how we show up and support one another in the time of need.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
When I’m gone, I’m gone so I’ll leave that to the ones that I love that’s left behind to tell that story led by my two son’s.
