We’re looking forward to introducing you to Jamila Surles. Check out our conversation below.
Jamila, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Traveling makes me lose track of time and find myself again. I feel I can relax from the day-to-day routines and get creative inspiration without as many familiar distractions.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Jamila Surles-Walker is a serial entrepreneur who has a background in Healthcare. Although she was passionate about healthcare she had a vision to be able to help businesses and different entities to gain exposure. She has created platforms to highlight those who were using their gifts and talents in business for positive contributions in their community. She decided to help business owners to grow and scale using social media and the media. The goal was to change the narrative in our communities and increase our economic footing which ultimately will help stabilize and support our circle of influence. We are a Media, Digital Marketing, and PR company. We specialize in video marketing which means we can create video content for your social media pages. We also do social media marketing so we will schedule the content and manage your pages if needed. We can get articles written in NBC, CBS, and ABC affiliate digital outlets. If you are interested in influencer marketing we can set you up with an influencer that can advertise on their pages due to their social media presence and audience engagement. ” I always knew that I wanted to be able to use my education to better our community and for the greater good. I realized that the media did not always support the cause of the underserved communities. I wanted to be able to give inspiration through ingenuity, entertainment, and business savvy.”
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The part of me that has served it’s purpose that I now need to release is the need to be understood all the time. Also, it is ok to take path that is not always conventional. It is ok to step out on faith and do things that have not been done or seemingly difficult.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
One thing I would say to my younger self would be to not underestimate myself and my abilities due to unfavorable circumstances or limiting beliefs.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
How I differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts is the amount of impact that something has. For example, utilizing media and entertainment to influence shifts in culture like “A Different World” which influenced many to attend HBCU’s or college in general if that is the path that they envision for themselves.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
What people will most understand about my legacy is that although my path is unconventional we see the impact as other industries and entities have aligned with our movement in promoting business and brands on a wide-scale using unique strategies.
