Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jill Karlin of Rolo

Jill Karlin shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Jill, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I am the CoCreator of Ekotecture with my late husband, Lee Porter Butler, the Father of Environmental Architecture …. So I am The Mother of Environmental Architecture. I have spent the last 33 years globally educating and inspiring folks all over the world about how to build sustainable housing. My job and my goal is to build a prototype based on Ekotecture by December at Art Basel as part of our installation.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hola, I am at a cafe in Barcelona waiting to go on my transatlantic Cruise 12 days back to Miami and then home to Lake Worth Beach. I travel the world from June to November. I never miss an opportunity to blab about Ekotecture the coCreation with my late husband…. This earth saving, humanity uplifting way to live on the planet, doing no harm and integrating with the earth in harmony and health.
I am an artist and most of my work is in some way related to Ekotecture, whether in huge watercolors of paradisical flowers, paintings of luxe, calme, and voluptuous scenes of paradise in oils or acrylics, hand painted tiles, hand painted furniture, wall murals, room installations or whatever surface you can imagine.
A yoga teacher, a meditator.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My husband,Lee Porter Butler!

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
When my husband was very sick and dying the bank took away our home and rendered us homeless. This was the best lesson in my life. Seeing as I am The Mother of environmental Architecture and my plan has always been to provide safe, clean, beautiful housing that does no harm to the earth, becoming homeless and experiencing in my cells, my bones, how 3/4 of the world live. There is so much stigma attached to homelessness, as many people are just a paycheck or 2 away from homelessness. Charities raise millions for diseases but few are solving the homeless crises. That is what Ekotecture will do beautifully

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Ekotecture and The Dolphin Dream

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Jill Karlin devoted her life to Ekotecture and The Dolphin Dream. Her birth family did not allow her to ever mention Ekotecture and prevented her from using her inheritance to realize her dream of building Ekotecture, she never shut up.
Ekotecture is foundational to Peace on Earth. No one on earth would ever know a thing about Ekotecture and The Dolphin Dream were it not for Jill’s lifetime devotion.
