Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with John Bates

John Bates shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

John, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Recently we were contacted by a new client that was requesting our services after purchasing a used, practically new vehicle for their growing family. The wife was due any day with their 2nd child and couldn’t take the car anywhere as she was on bed rest. She noticed a horrible smell within the car and wanted assistance with cleaning it. Because the purchase was so new, we reached out to the dealership for some guidance as we wanted to see if we could save the client some money by taking the car in ourselves so they could reclean it. This is not typical of any detailer as we are paid for our detailing services. I just know as a parent what it’s like preparing for a new baby and the stress that comes that exciting adventure.
We were met with some hesitation as the dealership did not want to assist.
With that being said, we documented everything and thoroughly cleaned the vehicle so that it was safe for the whole family to travel in.
We did charge the client at a discount rate to help out and provided the proper documentation so they could reach out to the representative from the sales team to see if they could assist with reimbursement as the new car should of been ready to go.
I am happy to report that because of our professional service with the client and the dealership, they honored the service and reimbursed the client for the services rendered. The client was out nothing and they were able to bring their new little one into the world without the worry of a smelly vehicle. That was a huge win for us as we know that everything is expensive and the prep for a new baby can be even more expensive.

We have earned every 5 Star we have gained along the way out here in Arizona.
We have been in Arizona for over 10 years and this is my professional detailing business. I wanted to be able to serve my local community and the surrounding areas because I understand that life has us all running ragged.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandfather saw the light in me early on. As a misguided child, he gave me direction and showed me how to work and be proud of the work I had accomplished. He taught me not to give up and that every failure wasn’t a failure if I had learned something.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There were several times I questioned myself being a mobile detailer in Arizona. It’s extreme heat taught me lessons of what not to do. Being a detailer in Colorado was nothing like being a detailer in Arizona. I started to change my procedure and how I approached every vehicle and learned new ways to accomplish success.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The industry tends to be one sided sometimes and only thinks one way. From chemicals you use to the process you perform, there can be to many people saying you are doing it wrong.
I always say learn everything you can, perfect your craft, focus on the relationship with your clients and you will find your way. But never be afraid to change and don’t let your ego get in the way. Not everyone is wrong because they don’t do it the way you do. You can stand to learn from everyone.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Stop trying to fill every minute of the schedule. There is more to life than any job. The ones you love should never wait. Tomorrow is not promised.
