We recently had the chance to connect with Julia Sunay and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Julia, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I’m very much a morning person—that’s when I feel most energized and focused. Since there are never enough hours in the day, I like to start early. I’ll make a morning coffee and spend some time catching up on life admin, whether that’s responding to emails, reviewing my week, or planning upcoming projects. After that, I head to the gym for a strength training session and usually treat myself to a second coffee late in the morning
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Julia Sunay, and I’m a New York City based Maestra and Theater Music Director. I’ve had the privilege of working on Broadway as well as touring across the United States with several shows over the past five years. I’m passionate about any project that fosters meaningful artistic collaboration. Whether I’m at the keyboard or on the podium in the orchestra pit, I’m driven by the joy of creating music with others.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
When I was about 14, I was appointed Drum Major for one of the largest marching bands in my city. As Drum major, I was responsible for leading nearly 100 students—conducting during performances and rehearsals and providing clear direction to the ensemble. It was an enormous responsibility at such a young age, and it pushed me to rise to the occasion and set a strong example for my peers. That year taught me a great deal about leadership. I learned that true power and influence don’t come from simply being “in charge” but from earning the respect and trust of my teachers and fellow band members. It was a formative experience that continues to shape how I lead and collaborate today.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say: relax, everything will work out. I’ve always struggled with patience, but over time I’ve learned the importance of trusting the bigger picture. One of my favorite sayings is, “trust the timing of your life.” Looking back, I can see that both my career and personal life unfolded at the pace they were meant to, arriving exactly when they were supposed to. I would tell younger Julia to value the process of growth, rather than rushing toward the outcome.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I’d say the biggest lie is that success in theater is purely talent. While talent plays a huge role, it’s equally important to be someone people enjoy working with. Personality, collaboration skills and flexibility all play a major role. Perseverance and the ability to navigate challenges are just as crucial as raw skill.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I think personal accountability is really important. Much of my drive comes from a desire to honor my own standards and consistently give my best. Even if no one ever praised my efforts, as long as I know I gave everything I had with the skills and knowledge I currently possess, I can feel confident and at peace with the work I’ve done.
