We’re looking forward to introducing you to K. Brat. Check out our conversation below.
Hi K., thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for K.Brat would be waking up, making breakfast for my family. Cleaning up toys every hour because my son is a curious and busy two year old. After he takes his first nap of the day I am always writing new music, listening to beat packs, and planning my events for the month. The events are normally shows, working on treatments for videos, and focusing on rollouts for the new music I’m working on.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am K.Brat a female artist from Birmingham, Alabama but I grew up in Central Park which is apart of Ensley. I have had an interest in music since I was about five years old, I loved hearing music on the radio and mimicking either the notes or the actual beat. I always thought that I would pursue a career in R&B, but took a different route with rapping. I enjoy freestyling which is how I became known within Alabama and on the local level in Birmingham. I am not just a rapper but a artist, I make all type of genres of music, I never like to keep myself in a box. I dropped my first album ‘Spoiled Brat’ in December of 2021, and will be dropping my second album this year. No date yet but I know my fans are anticipating the music.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That’s a very interesting question! As a child I was a victim of bullying and always told to be quiet and that I was too aggressive when things or people bothered me. I wouldn’t dare believe those words now. I realized once I got in the music industry that they only deem you aggressive when you stand up for yourself. I have run into people who thought because I try to stay quiet that I was an easy target, until I opened up my mouth and start correcting people up front. I am nobody’s push over and I walk to the beat of my own drum. You either like me or you don’t, and for those people in the don’t category I pray for them.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, I gave birth to my son Higee Jr but we call him HJ on June 22, 2023. Prior to his birth I had a lot loose ends music wise that I never tied up . Being on social media I started to give up on music because their was always a new artist popping up on my feed and I did not feel like I could be a mom and an artist at the same time. I took a break from music after his birth and began to suffer from post-partum depression and rage. I prayed, and slowly but surely began to get my foot back into the door of music while being a family woman. I can honestly say I had tremendous amount of support from my family and even my son, he was my biggest motivation to keep going.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Being a female in the music industry of today, I feel as though the industry sell females lies by supporting them coming into the game leading with sex but no talent. Yes, I do agree that sex sells but when you’re lacking talent eventually the fan base will die down or want more but you may not have more to offer beyond looks and likes. As a female rapper even myself I speak on sex and hype myself but I also can freestyle, I write my own songs, I know how to market singles. I am not just looks, when you dive deep into who I am as an artist I am not one dimensional.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
Once you become a mother to someone it is your duty to cherish, teach, nurture, and honor your child. My son is my legacy and I take pride in the fact that he loves my music, he see me on television and says “momma”. Before I had him I never truly thought about my legacy and what impact I wanted to make on my fans and young children who look up to me. Children will always remember who loved them, who made them feel good, and who has their best interest at heart. When I make music deep down I always say I want to make music that my son can listen to the clean version of and dance. A mom means a lot to a child, and my legacy will always be putting my son first to reap the benefits of my labor.
