We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kathy Sirico. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Kathy, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
What a great question! I would say that art-making is neither walking a single path nor wandering; it is a journey into oneself and out of oneself in many directions at once, between many timelines and realities.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a visual artist and poet in Brooklyn, NY, creating collage-based abstract paintings, stained-glass sculptures, and large-scale wall-based installations. I think of my works as empathetic monuments to the natural world that break down imagined boundaries between humans, the more than human world, and the larger environment in a time of climate crisis. My current series explores climate change in the Arctic Circle, drawing on my direct experiences as an artist-in-residence in the International Territory of Svalbard.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
My father was a law professor, legal scholar, and a published haiku poet. He instilled in me a deep academic drive for learning, as well as a passion for literature. As an artist, I am very engaged in artistic research. My research spans everything from art history, mythology, narrative storytelling, environmental science, mysticism, etc. I think about any topic from a variety of lenses, which in turn, expands my own perspective on what I can communicate in my work, and how that relates to culture at large.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Never! Art and I are inseparable.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. Making art requires that we are deeply honest with ourselves about who we are, what we value, and how we act in the world. My job is to know myself, to create what I can from that knowing, and to share that with others. That’s the real work.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When do you feel most at peace?
I am deeply connected to the natural world. When I spend time in nature, specifically with trees or with water, I am most at peace, and most in tune with my deeper intuition. I love sharing that connection in my artwork.
