We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kaylee Smiley. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Kaylee, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Arriving early to my salon studio is one of my favorite parts of the day. Preparation and intention create the foundation for a successful day, so I use that time to review inventory, go over my client schedule, prep my color station, and set clear intentions for the week.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Kaylee Smiley, a hairstylist and owner of Studio West in Marlow, Oklahoma. I’ve worked with professional hair brands, participated in trade shows, collaborated with education companies, and taught independently.
In 2025 opened Studio West; a calm, welcoming space where clients can relax and have an experience that feels both personal and intentional. It is truly a dream come true.
Right now I’m in a season of continuing to build and grow my studio, refine my brand, and to create a space that inspires creativity, comfort, and connection.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Limitations! I did not believe you could find a career that you truly feel passionate about. Not only can you love what you do, but there is truly no limit to what you are able to achieve. And what you ARE capable and worthy of reaching those goals.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There was a time when I felt deeply uninspired in my career. I was working in a salon that didn’t spark creativity, carrying the weight of a difficult experience with a previous company, and quietly questioning my passion for hair.
I learned that we are shaped by our environment, and that we’re also responsible for changing what no longer brings us joy or serves us.
Staying stuck was never an option, and I’m incredibly grateful I recognized that when I did.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I come across as confident on social media and when I’m teaching, but like anyone else, I have my own struggles. I live with ADD and depression, and impostor syndrome has been a familiar companion throughout my career.
Through therapy, medication, and a strong support system, I’ve learned how to move forward anyway. In doing so, I’ve been able to achieve more than I ever imagined, no longer letting my insecurities set the limits.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
The power personal connection has in our lives. Over the years, I’ve shared laughs, tears, breakthroughs, break-ups, and everything in between with clients in my chair. Being a listening ear can have a massive impact, and I’m deeply grateful for the trust my clients have to share those moments with me.
