Kazuhiro Takeda shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Kazuhiro, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
I’ve been surprised to see that non-Japanese customers with detailed knowledge of Japanese products are more common than when I first arrived in the U.S. in 2013. Some even know products I wasn’t familiar with. This shows me that Japanese products have made a deeper impact on the American market than I had expected.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kazuhiro Takeda, and I am the Director of OSAKA Marketplace Inc., a Japanese specialty grocery market located in Fremont in the Bay Area. After graduating from university in Japan, I began my career as a Fish Buyer at a department store, where I learned about products, manufacturers, and distribution channels. I then worked at a major GMS as the Food Strategy and Fish Department Director, helping to open new stores across Japan. When an acquisition opportunity arose in the U.S., I led the market entry, overseeing store renovations, new store openings, personnel planning, sales strategy, and product policies.”
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When I was managing convenience store operations during university, an elderly customer once told me, ‘It’s a great help that you always have the products I need.’ I was deeply moved by that moment and realized that I wanted to dedicate my career to retail—providing essential products that genuinely help people in their everyday lives.”
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
You may not know exactly what you want to do when you’re young, but if you live your life remembering that helping others also helps yourself, a path will naturally open up—and you’ll be surrounded by good people along the way.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Over the next 10 years, we are committed to opening 12 Osaka Marketplace stores—both large and small—across the Bay Area, while continuing to expand access to quality products and delicious food for our customers.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I think my customers would miss the personal care and guidance I provide. I love helping them find the best ingredients and prepared foods we offer like sashimi, sushi, and wagyu beef. I also help customers discover new Japanese foods and create an enjoyable shopping experience that feels authentic and welcoming.
