Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Kelly Coleman

We recently had the chance to connect with Kelly Coleman and have shared our conversation below.

Kelly, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My son. He is the greatest joy of my life.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Kelly Coleman. I am an independent hairstylist, but more importantly I am a wife and mother. I’m so fortunate that my career is a passion of mine that I have thoroughly enjoyed for 13 years now. I have spent several years concentrating on creating low maintenance looks for my clients, recognizing that we live in a demanding society- from a financial standpoint as well as with our time.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My husband is my greatest support in my career. A few years back, I was going through a trying time at my place of work. I knew that I needed to leave that job, but I was nervous to start over and felt I wouldn’t have the clientele to be financially successful. Time and time again, my husband confidently pushed for me to make the move, constantly telling me that I had the clientele to succeed, that enough people would follow me, and that I could soar higher than ever if I took the step to move on.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to always remember to be firm in my convictions, kindly. There is no sense in being anything but kind, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be strong and firm in the decisions you make that might go against others wants and desires.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I’d like to believe that my closest friends would say that the family my husband and I have created is what matters the most. I also think they’d say that being honest, genuine and kind are all qualities that matter the most to me.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I wholeheartedly believe I was born to be a hairstylist and a mother. I fell for the peer pressure in my younger years saying I “had to go to college” and fortunately I recognized that that was not the direction for me before I was too deep into that education. I also believe that my career path as a hairstylist has given me the flexibility that I need to be a very present mother.
