Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Lane Morris of Kentucky/Tennessee

We recently had the chance to connect with Lane Morris and have shared our conversation below.

Lane, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Right now, I wake up in the morning, have coffee and Bible study. I’ve found that my faith has been extremely important in the decisions I make in and outside of my music, and it’s just a great way to start the day!!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Howdy! I’m Lane, a singer songwriter from KY. Music for me has always been a conduit for expression, and a way to cope with the hardships of life, so I try to make music that’s the same for other people. My art has a lot of nature based imagery,
Such as my song “The Boat”, set on an easy flowing river. At this point in time I’m really focusing on getting better at songwriting, and getting music out for folks to hear. Speaking of which, I just released an album called “The Summit”!
It was a project I’ve been planning since the beginning of the year, and it’s finally here!!

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I think the part that needs to be released is the worrier in me. I constantly worry, whether it’s about people or work performance or my future. The only thing it’s really done for me is hurt me. While I think there’s some good in being cautious, worry only makes things worse for everyone involved.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The most immediate is my parents divorce, and the hardships that ensued afterwards. Dad and I were living with his friend, and mom and I moved around pretty frequently. There was a lot of just extremely negative situations for all of us, so there was a lot to process as a boy.
While I haven’t fully healed, I’ve learned that the situation doesn’t define me, and music really helped me push through to see something better. I started really playing when everything happened, so I guess it was fuel for the fire.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
That talent alone makes successful people or businesses. I could be good at playing basketball, but if I don’t do the work I won’t get into the playoffs. It’s the same with any business or relationship. I’ve learned the hard way that talent doesn’t really amount to a hill of beans if you don’t do the necessary work/hustle.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
Why I did it even in the hard times
