We recently had the chance to connect with Lisa Mayers and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
First 90 mins of my day starts with a conversation with my creator. Giving thanks for the past and getting grace for the future and getting wisdom for the present. I like to take a moment to redownload my assignment for the day. Remembering the reason for why all things happen and making adjustments to make sure the world sees the best me possible. I find me a theme or word of the day to help me stay on task and to also keep me motivated.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lisa Mayers and I was born in Little Rock Arkansas to a single mother. I was her only child so I grew up pretty much alone. I had to learn early on to entertain myself. So my imagination was out of control. Me and my imaginary friends would cause havoc, solve crimes, and conquer the world. I developed a love for writing to express myself and in the beginning I wrote poetry. It was a quick way to make my point. But as I got older I decided that storytelling and the development of characters really was my joy. I wrote my first musical stage play at 50 and my first feature film at 51. Pressure which is my first project is on Tubi and several other streaming platforms. Me and my director created Pressure Universe as a hub or home for film professionals in our community to combine resources to be able to create everyone’s dream projects. With no big film company operating within our reach, we must be creative and find ways to grow that showcase our talents with little support. Pressure Universe helps with that gap! We, as a team, just finished our first Series called “The Diamond Series” and just started production on our first comedy! We have several short films in post production and we also do music videos and a series called “Studio Sessions” where we pair a local rap artist with a band for a night of great music! I am also one of the founding members of the Real Aunties of Little Rock. RALR is a group of older women who are Aunties in the community. We host events, volunteer, and are a senior support system for anyone who needs us. My company BBJ Management and Production specializes in event planning, set design, catering, and decor. We also offer management and artist development services.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
That family doesn’t have to be people you were born with. Being an only child, I was so used to being by myself. My father had several children and he introduced me to my siblings at the age of 6. I wasn’t born around this people I was just tossed into a sea of 40 people and told this is ur family. The rollercoaster ride that followed was eye opening, emotional, heartbreaking, joyous, traumatic, and beautiful all at the same time. But what I grew up thinking was it was just me and my mom. And then one day I have sisters, nieces, nephews. This felt like meeting new friends at school or in ur neighborhood. No internal connection of being raised In the same space. No inner draw towards each other that siblings have. Just an understanding that we family. It taught me as I got older that we can make our family ourselves as well. We choose who to love and bring into our lives, we choose who we give our life, time and heart to. We make our own families.
Love is thicker than Blood at times. I have a blood sister I have never spoken with in my entire life but I talked to my “sister” Carol yesterday. Family isn’t always who u born with it’s who you choose!
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Not a time, several times. Life can be brutal especially if you lose faith. Growing up female in a male dominated world gave to extra challenges that inflicted wounds of deep trauma and depression. As a young domestic violence victim, at one point I felt that dying was the answer for escaping a prison I created for myself. Being so blinded by whatever demonic possession that had me, I could not see the key was in the door and I just need to walk out. Glad one day I was literally pushed out! Later in life, I felt a loss that gave way to thoughts of just giving up. But I keep getting the reminders that This is a test and only a test! Those words ring in my ear when stuff hits the fan! Now in my 50’s, giving up ain’t an option! I’m trying to live as much as possible.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
The people I choose to spend my life with! My children My Job and my Passions. Being Fair and Being Present. Loyalty and being honest are critical to any successful relationship. Loving the Good bad and ugly of someone is unconditional love and being active in each other’s lives is ur responsibility as a friend. Being supportive in private not just in public. Our relationship is not for the internet. If you love me text my phone or come by my house. I’m not perfect, tell me when I’m not being a good friend. Again I have only child syndrome, I will disappear for weeks, but I still love u like yesterday.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I loved them. That everytime I saw them or was around them I told them I loved them. That I showered them with hugs and kisses like an old grandma does. That I told them the things they needed to hear in that moment. That I gave them a piece of me to always have. That I was a motivating factor in their lives and that I pushed them to be great. That I was encouraging and always in the background clapping and proud! That I was a stand in for whatever they needed at that moment. Mother, sister, auntie, teacher, mentor, DD, protector, bodyguard etc I pray I was a blessing!
