Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Literaturebyjessc

We recently had the chance to connect with Literaturebyjessc and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Literaturebyjessc, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
With the correct mindset, intelligence, energy, and integrity combine. You can never have enough knowledge; we learn something new every day, even when we don’t see it as a learning experience. We look at the youth today, and we see some of them in the wrong predicaments. What did we learn? If the older generations fixed their ways of living, the youth today wouldn’t appear as it does. Energy comes from being determined. Whether you have kids, a business, or even a simple job, there are still people who look up to you to keep themselves pushing. Integrity also coincides with intelligence because it shows how you carry yourself. It doesn’t define you, but it shows how you were raised and the potential of where you are going. With that being said, they are all equally important.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
So, almost 10 years ago, I was diagnosed with Epilepsy. I was trying to figure out ways around it and how I could express myself with the emotions I felt during that time. I started writing in notebooks, which inspired me to create a website. I just knew someone was counting on me for their story to keep going. I started blogging daily, and someone gave me the idea to start expanding my areas of writing, leading to different topics and blogging for actual people. The brand of the website, which was titled “Literaturebyjessc,” eventually became who I was known as in my city and in different areas. I started working more with the youth, attending events, becoming an advocate for many things, including health awareness, and even started writing for some amazing artists. This spiked my website views, attracting visitors from all over, and even earned a mention in Wikipedia as they spoke about Jersey Club, which is the category of blogging that I first started in.
I wanted my writers to know that just because I was “disabled,” I wasn’t incapable of anything. I started meeting up with people who had similar conditions, and helped change their view of things.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was a regular kid at heart, determined to be something just like everyone else. I just didn’t know my path of choice. Growing up as a child, I realized that I was very social. I would always want to play, or feel bad for someone when they didn’t have something, and ended up sharing my heart. The apartments I grew up in stood together like a family. Of course, we saw the good, bad, and the ugly, but as children, we realized we had to stick together. Til this day, those children and I, who are now adults, still make sure we see each other when we can. Some we lost, and others have started different careers, such as nursing and food businesses. I say that to say, look at who I am today. I am a giver, I am a provider, I am a blogger, I am a survivor, and so much more. Clearly, growing up as a child, who I am today was already being created, and it took me years to understand why.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stopped hiding my pain when I finally got over the fact that I have Epilepsy, that’s who I am, and there is nothing I can do about it. For years after I was diagnosed with Epilepsy, I would always question why me? Having this disability affects many aspects of life, such as playing video games, driving, and experiencing fireworks, among others, and much more. So I experienced life without a disability until about age 19, and after that, I could never do the things I used to. I used to always wonder what I could do without worrying if I would seize, which was a very emotional point in life, yes, you can call that pain, it was emotional and mental pain. I started using that as power the moment I realized the severity of it within life, and turned that pain into “Literaturebyjessc,” by simply using my voice as power, and I was heard.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
People have this idea that when you become disabled, you can’t be anything or the person they expect you to be. What I mean by this is going to college, working, etc. A belief I am deeply committed to is showing the world that just because one is disabled doesn’t mean they are incapable of becoming something; they’re still capable in many different ways. Look at people with Autism, I’ve seen many of them take materials and place them in a specific order. If it is moved, they notice and place it back where they had it. I’ve seen them be some of the fastest to fix a Rubik’s Cube, and then there are those with no disability who can’t even remember where they placed their phone last. I wanted to different disability to emphasize the importance of more disabilities. I am committed to making people understand that being disabled doesn’t mean being incapable, no matter how long it takes.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
One thing about me is that it could be pouring down raining, and I’d give you the sweater on my back because you don’t have one, noticing that you’re cold. Plot twist, I’m anemic, and probably colder than you, but that’s just the kindness within me. I’m not built to have any sort of hate in my heart because I’ve always believed my purpose was to help. So tell the world that I was always a giver, a person who would do anything for nothing in return, and I’ve always believed in doing what’s right, even when you feel temptation not to, or give up. Then, with that being said, you can lead into how I started “Literaturebyjessc,”. Always remember, the things you do every second of the day always has some sort of effect on the next day.
