Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Luther Wright of Washington DC

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Luther Wright . Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Luther , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Just recently I completed an 11 mural project in Washington DC. On the project I was about to collaborate with my mentor and favorite local Artist Jahru ( Jeff Huntington) . In my collaboration with Jahru we used my daughters image as the subject . To have her face on the side of a building in my hometown was a pretty proud moment for me as a Father and Artist .

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello I’m Luther Wright , the founder of The Collective Artist , Louie Wri Clothing and Luther Wright Art . I’ve been a full-time Artist for 10 years primarily working in Washington DC and Maryland . The Collective Artist was started to give new and emerging Artist platforms to sell, , display work and engage with new audience’s . The company was started in 2014 and now has over 20 working Artist in the roster. Our last group display was at Art all night in Congress Heights where 7 artist painted live murals throughout the night . Luther Wright Art caters my personal art career . As an Artist I work in public art installing murals in community and commercial spaces , as well exhibiting in galleries and juried exhibits with my Canvas work . Louie Wri Clothing was birthed during COVID 19 as my murals took off around my city a lot of people started to ask for the images on t shirts . Already having a background in fashsion and running clothing brands before it was a no brainer to transform my art into its own clothing brand . Louie Wri Clothing can be found on our online shop or at Artstination at the National Harbor .

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Becoming a Father has changed my perspective on the world , life , and legacy. My daughter gives me a greater self purpose , she makes me appreciate the simple and little things in life. As I watch her grow ,learning and seeing things for the first time I feel my inner child and a softer version of me awakening.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
For years I fell out of love with art when my older cousin Curtis Hubbard that really inspired me to be an Artist suddenly passed. I looked up to my cousin and was amazed at his artistic ability. Losing him was a huge blow to me personally and my art career. I stopped creating for years and wanted nothing to do with the Visual Arts . Entering collage and being forced to take Art electives my professors slowly broke me out of my shell and I started to regain my passion for the Arts. I now dedicate my entire career to my cousin for the impact and influence he had on my life . I can’t help but to think he’s watching over me protecting me through this journey.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I believe in the power of creation . I will never stop creating. I’ve dedicated my life to the visual arts , beautifying our communities, telling untold stories , documenting the times and the representation of culture .

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
Within my work and like most communities there is diversity . People will know that I never stopped exploring and I continued to push my creative boundaries reinventing myself as an Artist over and over again .
