We recently had the chance to connect with Margaret Orlando and have shared our conversation below.
Margaret, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I’m an early riser—I usually start my day around 4:30 a.m. with yoga, exercise, and a quick sauna session. While I’m moving through that routine, I like to listen to podcasts or YouTube videos that focus on growth and self-improvement. Afterward, a quick jump in the shower and get ready for the day. Before starting my 9–5 job, I post on social media for our business and catch up on emails. Those first 90 minutes really set the tone and give me balance before the day gets busy.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We are Danny and Maggie Orlando, a husband-and-wife team behind DAMO BBQ. We’re a self-made, self-funded duo passionate about serving bold, flavorful Central Texas-style BBQ with an Italian twist. You can find us at our food truck or at private and corporate catering events. What makes us unique is not just the food—it’s the partnership, the story, and the heart we put into building something of our own, together.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Motherhood has been my greatest role, and while I’ll always be a mom, my focus is shifting. I’ve raised two strong, independent young men who are out building their own lives. Letting go of being involved in every moment of their day-to-day has been difficult, but it’s also allowed me to step into a new chapter and discover a fresh sense of purpose for myself.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Danny and I aren’t quitters, but this past year tested us more than ever. We poured our hearts, energy, and money into trying to open a brick-and-mortar location, only to face roadblocks with restrictions and requirements that made it impossible. That dream had to be released—but instead of giving up, we pivoted. We’ve rebuilt, refocused, and now have a new location for our food truck. The setback turned into a redirection, and we’re stronger for it.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes—what you see is truly who I am. I greet every customer with kindness, gratitude, and authenticity because their support means everything to us. We want people to feel our passion, not just taste our food. Over time, this openness has led to friendships, loyal regulars, and a real sense of community. To me, that’s what makes what we’re building so special.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope people say I lived with kindness, faith, and joy. That I was someone who could brighten a room with humor, but also someone who could walk with others through their darkest times. I want my story to be remembered as one filled with love, light, and the simple but powerful impact of treating people well.
