Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Marissa Webb Tonkovic of Wheaton IL

Marissa Webb Tonkovic shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Marissa, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think one of the biggest misunderstandings about a photography business is the concept of time. People often assume it’s instant—after all, the click of the shutter only takes a fraction of a second. But what they don’t see is everything that happens behind the scenes. For every hour I spend photographing, there are often six to eight hours of careful editing and refining on the back end. I choose to hand edit each image rather than rely on AI, because I want my clients’ photos to feel authentic, timeless, and thoughtfully crafted. It’s that attention to detail that makes the final gallery more than just pictures—it makes it a true reflection of the moment.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Marissa, the owner and photographer behind Marissa K Webb Photography. I specialize in capturing weddings and family stories and sometimes a side of branding with a mix of artistry, authenticity, and a little adventure. What makes my work unique is that I approach photography with both an editorial eye and a documentary heart—I want my couples and families to look back and not just see how everything looked, but feel how it all felt.

Photography has always been more than just a job for me—it’s a way of preserving connection and legacy. I hand-edit every image because I value the craft and the individuality of each story, and I want my clients to receive a gallery that feels personal and timeless, not something created by an algorithm.

Right now, I’m focused on serving couples who want meaningful, intentional wedding days—whether that’s a big celebration or something intimate and unconventional. I love being up for an adventure, and I’ve photographed everything from cozy backyard weddings to destination celebrations. At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to create images that feel alive, heartfelt, and true to you.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
The person who taught me the most about work was my grandfather. He always reminded me that family is everything—“there’s nothing like it”—and that perspective has shaped not just my personal life, but the way I approach my business, too. At the same time, he instilled in me the importance of a strong work ethic. He showed me that hard work and dedication matter, but they mean the most when they’re rooted in love, loyalty, and connection. That balance has been my foundation in building a career where relationships are just as important as the work itself.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: trust yourself. The path may not always look clear, but you’re stronger and more capable than you realize. Keep following your curiosity, lean into what lights you up, and know that all the little steps—even the hard ones—are leading you somewhere beautiful.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the photography industry tells itself is that it’s “saturated.” Yes, there are a lot of photographers out there, but I truly believe there’s a photographer for everyone. It’s not a one-size-fits-all industry—clients aren’t just looking for someone with a camera, they’re looking for someone whose style, energy, and approach align with their story. While it may seem like there are endless budget photographers available, that doesn’t diminish the value of those who bring artistry, connection, and a tailored experience to their work. There’s room for everyone, and the key is finding the right fit.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
There’s nothing like being with my two daughters. When they’re close — playing, leaning into a hug, or even just quietly beside me — I feel utterly grounded. Their small, ordinary moments (the giggles, the sleepy sighs, the little hands in mine) remind me what matters and bring a calm that’s deeper than anything else.
