Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Melinda Matticoli of Skillman

Melinda Matticoli shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Hi Melinda, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
When I wake up, I start by feeding my cats. Then, I brush my teeth, put on deodorant, and brush my hair. From there, I drink my AG1, eat something, and take my medications. The next portion of my morning always looks different, depending on what my day brings—I either hop into my car to head to the day’s adventure, journal, or tackle some computer work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a freelance choreographer, director, and educator. I work on film and live performance projects for music artists and brands, while also educating the next generation of artists.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Growing up around business owners taught me a lot about work and greatly contributed to developing my work ethic. I also believe that being immersed in the hustle culture of the Northeast conditioned me to keep working, although I am currently working on reframing my mindset to live a healthier, more balanced lifestyle.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I want to remind my younger self that nothing is constant in life. I feel that when I was a child, I really didn’t understand why everything was constantly changing around me and how to cope with that in my life. I feel I also got into habits of constantly thinking ahead and forgetting to live in the current moment. This is something I try and honor day after day for my current self and my inner child.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am committed to living life as my authentic self, no matter what comes my way. I try to show up as me, no matter the space I take up. As a freelancer, I am constantly in different spaces and places all the time, and I value showing up as myself in each of those spaces, to be living my life authentically to me and to others I get to share space with.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Maybe not literally tap-dancing, but I am always so excited and filled with joy when I have a new project to work on. I am deeply connected to creation, and it is part of my mission on this planet. I feel any opportunity I get to live a creative life is a gift and something that excites me.
