Mellisha Carter-Linton shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mellisha, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
I like meeting interesting and intelligent people but integrity is of greater importance to me.
You may meet someone who is intelligent but does not have integrity. This is not someone I would want to be around, as there may be a possibility that they will use their intelligence to manipulate and deceive you.
From childhood to this point in my life, I have had bad experiences with most of the people that I have encountered. They
pretend that they care and give you a false sense of security, next thing you know you are on the street of rejection and loneliness.
These days I prefer solitude and I work to fortify my relationships with the few that have been with me over the years.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mellisha Carter-Linton. I am the Best Selling Author of the book, “From Bitterness to Betterness : Principles to Change Your Outlook on Life”. I am also a Certified Christian Empowerment/Life Coach and Mentor. I have received national awards in Literary Arts, in my country Jamaica. I am an Internal Auditor by profession and a prolific writer by purpose.
My book captures the story of a young lady named “Genie” and it highlights the principles of forgiveness, breaking generational curses, and pursuing one’s God-given purpose. In my coaching sessions clients are provided with the strategies for navigating life’s challenges through a blend of faith and practical guidance.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
When I was younger, I was told that I was a mistake continually. I used to believe that I had no purpose and that I should not be here. This attitude caused others to treat me, as such. One without purpose. I struggled for years with low self-esteem and with self-destructive thoughts, until I became a parent.
I had a life altering experience in the year 2020 and that changed how I saw myself and shifted how I would spend the rest of my days on earth.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Education was always my escape from the trauma I experienced in my life. When I got to University, I initially struggled to adjust to the teacher – learning experience and my grades were not what I wanted them to be.
I felt that I was failing myself and failing at life, officially. The only source of my solace became a mountain I struggled to climb. I thought seriously about putting an end to my misery but God intervened.
In short, yes there was a time I wanted to give up.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I spend most of my time reading the Bible and I admire the Bible Character Daniel. In the book of Daniel 6, it states that he had an excellent spirit in him. He served the Heavenly Father faithfully.
Daily, I try my best to operate in excellence in all I do, like Daniel.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I am doing exactly what I was born to do, to write and empower others.
My purpose is to let people know that the trauma, scars and hardships they endured, made them the best person to lift themselves and others out of the rut they are in.
My story will bring glory to my Heavenly Father and healing to His people.
