We’re looking forward to introducing you to Michel Cruz-Garcia. Check out our conversation below.
Michel, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Who are you learning from right now?
Lately I’ve been learning from historical figures. Studying biographies from people such as Katherine the Great, Alexander, Julius Caesar and Pancho Villa all open your eyes to different worlds and the challenges they faced.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My art intends to capture the essence of life. They are emotional encounters that invite viewers to explore
the unseen and the unspoken. My work is shaped from personal memory, everyday life, and a deep reverence for nature. It aims to evoke emotions and ignite fresh perspectives on the human journey.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My parents saw who I was early in my childhood and encouraged me to pursue my passions. It’s always important to listen to those close to you in order to get direction in your life. Sometimes, it’s easy to overthink and not take action but someone like a close friend or parent might just give you the clarity to take a chance and go for it. In any relationship, a sign of a strong bond is one where that person motivates you and is supportive of your goals and passions because they’ll want you to become the best version of yourself.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I believe the only thing you really have in life is choice. It’s easy to worry about a million different things but at the end of the day, all you have is control over what you do with your life. So when it comes to going through problems and suffering, you can either let it bring you down or decide to confront it and give it the best you have. With every problem you overcome, you will gain more confidence and reslience, which is far more than whats success can teach you.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
I believe honoring your culture must be protected at all costs. It is the true essence of what you are and if you’re not familiar with your own culture, it’s never too late to begin discovering. Studying who your parents are, where your ancestors are from, or even the language they speak, will unlock new worlds that can inspire you in your life and work.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I believe it’s always important to give everything your best. Whether that’s a relationship or your work because at the end of the day, what’s the point if it’s not being done to its fullest potential? Sometimes it’s easy to fall into trying to make everything perfect but sometimes we just need to remember this is all a process. In art, you can keep working on a piece forever but your style might evolve as you continue in your journey. The kind of emotion you used in a certain time in your life might not be the same later on.
