Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Michelle Boucher of Olympia

Michelle Boucher shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Michelle, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Tattooing. What I’m being called to do now is something that was a dream of mine 30 years ago. Back then, a lack of confidence and support discouraged me from pursuing it, and I let fear convince me I wasn’t ready. But now, after being humbled throughout my creative career, I feel a renewed sense of readiness. I’m open to learning again, willing to be a beginner, and no longer afraid to step into something new. This time, I’m choosing to trust myself and answer the call I once ignored.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Michelle Boucher (Boo-shay) I am a self-taught artist with a background in fashion and film (costumes). My work explores the spiritual connection between humans and the natural world, including the animals who share our lives. I want my art to evoke something deep within others—an emotion, a resonance, a feeling that invites them to look closer and reflect. Through my practice, I seek to explore the mystical and encourage viewers to dig beneath the surface of what they see.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Oh, we’re going there! Okay. The version of myself that doubted my own abilities and held back out of fear. For years, that lack of confidence may have protected me in some way, but it has served its purpose. It no longer aligns with who I’m becoming. I’m ready to let go of the insecurity, the hesitation, and the belief that I’m not capable. Releasing that old part of me creates space for growth, courage, and a renewed sense of purpose. I am no longer the “starving artist”, I am the thriving artist. The question I continuously ask myself is, “Who am I if I am no longer the stories I tell about myself?”

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of being seen. To be seen meant to be judged. I know I’ll be judged no matter what I do, so I might as well choose the path I truly want. It’s not that I don’t care about others’ opinions—I’m simply learning not to let them dictate my choices or influence how I feel about myself

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I’m committed to never stopping being a student in life. Whether it’s a new philosophy, a new craft, a new canvas, or a new way of being, I want to stay open and curious. The more I learn, the more I grow and evolve—and that commitment is lifelong.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing what I was born to do. I was born to create—creativity is woven so deeply into who I am that it feels unnatural not to express it. Creating isn’t something I was told to do; it’s something that has always lived within me.
