Mike Vannelli shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Mike, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
That a lot of them don’t just want a video, they want a partner who helps guide the strategy too. They come in thinking it’s about production, but what surprises me is how much they value the storytelling and marketing side we bring.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Mike Vannelli, the Creative Director of Envy Creative, a video ad agency in Simi Valley, California. We specialize in creating ads that don’t just look good, but actually sell for brands, e-commerce companies, and apps. What makes us unique is how we blend storytelling with marketing strategy, so every video feels authentic and drives results. Right now, we’re focused on helping businesses stand out in crowded digital spaces with content that connects and converts.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
The need to do everything myself. Early on, I felt like I had to be hands-on with every detail, but letting go of that has allowed me to trust my team, scale the business, and focus on bigger-picture growth.
When did you last change your mind about something important?
Recently, I changed my mind about how much I should lean on AI tools. At first, I saw them as a shortcut, but now I see them as a way to expand what’s possible, speed up workflows, and free up time for the creative parts that matter most.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I rely a lot on my team’s ideas. They bring fresh perspectives and creative angles I might not see on my own. I also look to our clients’ insights, since they know their audiences best and that helps shape stronger campaigns.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes, early on I thought landing bigger name clients would feel like the ultimate win. While it was exciting, I realized the real satisfaction comes from building lasting relationships and creating work that genuinely helps a brand grow, not just chasing logos.
