Monique Chappell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Monique, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
My son. He’s two, yet he communicate and behaves like a five-year-old. Although I’m sure our strong bond has influenced his development and growth, I do have to highlight his willingness to learn and explore his environment. It brings me joy to see him learn so much, academically (thanks to me) & about music (from my dad).We call him a genius baby.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My students call me Ms. Chappell or Mo. I have many hats within the community. I am a teacher, tutor, mentor, educational advisor and a program coordinator at a nonprofit. I teach seniors during the school year in the district, tutor students in the afternoon online and in person and on my free time I love to spend time at the nonprofit, The House of Darla (HOD). At HOD, we provide a safe space for our youth while providing life and soft skill mentoring and opportunities through the arts, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, health equity, wellness, events, certifications and outreach.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
It’s funny you ask that question because I already knew who I was since my first day of PreK. When I was a child, I always wanted to be a teacher. I always envisioned myself grading papers, giving lectures and teaching others a new skill. As I got older though, I realized being a teacher is more than that. It’s about being a guide, a resource and a support to those in need.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely, I’ll never forget the time I took a test three times to get certified for a specific subject area and I failed each time. I remember burning all of my teaching materials and saying, “I never want to teach again.” It’s kind of hard to ignore your passion though.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
April, who is the founder of The House of Darla. I love how she listens to my ideas and goals and she is big on asking for advice and opinions before making any big decisions for the organization. She’s loves to give back to others and she makes anyone feel welcomed when they enter the HOD. Although she is the boss, she sparks the boss in others and shows them the pathway to becoming a great leader.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m doing what I love to do with the people I love. I’m at peace when I’m with my family at home. I’m at peace when I go to work and see my students excited to come to my classroom. I’m at peace when I’m at the House of Darla assisting April. It feels great to be at peace in any and every area and aspect of my life.
