Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Monye Bam Bam Tucker

Monye Bam Bam Tucker shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Monye Bam Bam, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
I’m chasing a vision, I’m chasing a legacy to leave for my children. I’m chasing greatness. This past weekend, on August 16 I competed in Houston Texas for the world championship and was victorious making myself a two time world champion, but there’s still much more that needs to be done. I’m chasing negative opinions, I’m chasing doubt, while chasing my dreams. I have people that depend on me so I can’t stop.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Monye “Bam Bam” Tucker and I am a two time world champion in karate. I am the current UMAHOF World Champion. I’m a former WKO European kickboxing Champion, and a former South Korean Peninsula Taekwondo Champion. I have a brand of trained fighters across the United States making positive impacts not only in the ring and cage, but in their communities as well. We support back to school drives, one on one mentorships, as well as help sponsor events. Our brand is very diverse having talent in multiple fields, such as music writers, content, creators, authors, and entrepreneurs. I am currently working on a book myself explaining the principles and the importance of blocking, attacking, and moving.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My grandmother was the first person that actually made me believe that I was already great before any of the accomplishments came. I always questioned what makes me different than anyone else? Is my dream realistic? It was my grandmother who told me I was born with a specific gift and when I realized what it was, then I will be able to be anything that I wanted to be..

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self “I’m proud of you, You never gave up when there was times that broke you physically and mentally and you never gave up. I’m proud of you Champ!”

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
That I was like everyone else and I wasn’t. Your environment can make you believe you are someone you are not and the people within that environment have the ability to keep you down if you let them. When I changed my environment and circumstances I saw everything was possible. I never looked back.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m under those lights exchanging shots with my opponents I feel very much at peace. I’ve done this for a very long time. Everything is second nature to me when it comes to Combat sports. Knowing that I have the ability to control the outcome at any time that I choose brings me not only a level of confidence but a level of patience.
