We’re looking forward to introducing you to Nico Cobo. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Nico, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
Always listen closely to your client. Sometimes offering more options to the artist or producer is the right move; other times, less is more. There are moments when they don’t want to hear any suggestions at all—and knowing when to stop playing can save the day. The key is learning to read your clients quickly so your time in the studio stays productive. Personally, I’ve always valued being proactive, creative, focused, and ready to contribute.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Nicolas Cobo. I’m a session and touring musician, and more recently, a music producer. I specialize in plucked string instruments, which is why I record guitar parts for various artists and projects almost every day. I believe my greatest strengths are determination, discipline, and being approachable—a true team player who’s always curious and eager to learn.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Before the pandemic, I was starting to make a name for myself as a musician. Then 2020 came, and everything changed—contracts, gigs, and endorsements vanished overnight. I ended up working in a call center for quite a while, and for years, I had to fight hard just to keep my passion for music alive.
That period of desperation and frustration taught me something essential: no matter what happens, music is my one and only path. At the same time, I’ve learned that my mental and physical health must come first. Beyond that, I’ll keep playing, composing, and recording—even if it means taking a part-time job to meet my responsibilities.
When you were sad or scared as a child, what helped?
Music!
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
My idea of success has changed. I used to believe it meant being constantly busy, juggling a hundred tasks at once. The industry often makes you feel like you need to wake up at 5 a.m. and have five fully produced songs ready by noon. Don’t get me wrong—you do need to push yourself to reach your goals. But I’ve learned that taking time to live, enjoy, and truly appreciate every step and every achievement is just as important.
Today, my definition of success is freedom—having control over my time. That, to me, is the ultimate privilege.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
At the end of the day, that’s really what I do. I record guitar, bass, tres cubano, and other instruments for many artists—and honestly, most people never know who played what. And I’m okay with that. What matters to me is giving my best to every project.
What I love most is the constant creative challenge—it keeps my mind alive.. Recognition may come or not—but that’s not why I do it. I do it because it’s my craft and my business.
