Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Paul Magege Jr of Maryland

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Paul Magege Jr. Check out our conversation below.

Paul, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I think what is most misunderstood about my business is the fact that I am still figuring all of this out and I do not know everything that I am doing. Every single day I have to learn new things about how photography and business intertwine and on top of that, social media is rapidly changing before our eyes and it can be hard to understand where my business fits into this new way of life. A Business Professor once told our class that “starting a business is like having a baby” and I am learning how true that is. You will never know what you’re doing but eventually if keep going everything will come together.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, My name is Paul Magege Jr. and I am a visual artist using photography as my expression and my brand name is called LIfeofPJR and you can follow me @lifeofpjr on everything. My brand is not just about my life but the life I see everyday and capturing people, places, projects, collaborations etc. of things I can along the way so that others can learn from my life which is real life but also just see and feel what I do. What makes my story, brand and my photography unique is that I suppose everything I photograph and encapsulate is raw, unfiltered and honest. Currently I am working on some collaborations and sponsorships and making a few products I hope people might want to buy and use if they like it.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My family. My friends who are like family to me who I grew up with from Prince George’s County, Baltimore and Anne Arundel County, Maryland. My teachers growing up who would always tell me apply myself instead of goofing off and worrying about other things. My bosses from my old jobs who always spoke truth to me. My old coworkers from all my old jobs. Friends, associates, classmates and beautiful people I met in elementary, middle, high school to college who had a huge impact on me and always will. Random people who I met who told me I am talented and gifted. Mentors I had in high school and college who educated me. My therapists who have treated me and gave me so much inspiration.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering to me is pain and pain is life’s greatest teacher as I had heard many times in my life. You will never know what it means to succeed until you have suffered first and that’s what suffering taught me. Success is what comes after you have suffered and I am in no way saying you have to put yourself in pain in order to succeed but I realized its not realistic to expect to successful without some type of pain, it just doesn’t work like that in this world.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
We all feel insecure sometimes.

Life is a just series of direct consequences to every single action you take.

Everyone has someone, 1 person, that was designed for them in this world which is what some people call soulmates or twin flames.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
In entrepreneurship, the foundation that you are taught is that as an entrepreneur your company has to solve a problem for the world and the bigger the problem you solve, the more successful you’ll be. I feel like I was born to solve problems whatever way that looks like and through the process of problem solving, came art and through that I found entrepreneurship which is what I was born to do. At the same time I was told to make my page and keep making art so I am also doing what I was told to do.
