We’re looking forward to introducing you to Peter Ivancovich. Check out our conversation below.
Peter, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I have started an artistic Salon called Les xx. We meet quarterly. I love being part of a creative community.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Peter Ivancovich, a Los Angeles based artist working mostly with photography. My practice explores world creation in set pieces that are many times diorama like in nature. The demise of of Hollywood studio system is a theme so I having been using old props and hand painted vintage backdrops as well as taxidermy and objects I make myself to tell my visual stories. I work on a sand base in my studio representative of the deserts and beaches of Southern California. As a queer artist, many of my pieces are filtered through my experience and reflect that perspective as well. Currently, I am collaborating with British writer/performer James Antoniou on two new series that involve figurative work harking back to the fashion photography I did in the past. I am really excited to reveal those to the world.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I have always seen the world through my own lens. I feel artists are usually “outsiders” with their own vision.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Staying true to yourself is the most important thing. Just keep going.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I now know I need to lead an “artistic life” surrounded by other creatives. I am committed to making that happen.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I love the joy of creation. It can be messy and stressful but it’s very satisfying.
