We’re looking forward to introducing you to Priye David. Check out our conversation below.
Priye, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
First thing I do is I wake up. Hard as it may be for some people to believe, I have to wake up before I start my day.
But seriously, I do not really have a structure to my day. Sometimes I get up and get a grip on my day. Breakfast then I start working on a pending task, make some calls, edit pictures, sending and replying to emails… etc. On some other days I could start my day watching Netflix or making calls to my friends and just ease into the day.
On the days I start my day with Netflix, sometimes I’m trying to get into my creative zen (whatever that means). I’ll usually focus on the pictures, composition and cinematography to fuel my creativity.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hey everyone, my name is Priye David. I am a fine art portrait and headshot photographer based in British Columbia, Canada. My specialty is glamor styled portraiture. The goal is to help make my clients look and feel beautiful, and confident. The goal of my photography is to portray people as they are, but even more importantly to show them as they want to be seen.
Part of the discussions I have with clients is “how do you want to be seen in your portraits?” and based on their response I craft a photoshoot that showcases them as their future self.
I started off my photography journey as a hobby but I have since built a thriving business and helped other people with their photography, both on the creative side and the business side.
I am currently working on a campaign I have called Fabulous over 40. The aim is to photograph 40 women over the age of 40 and help them tell their stories. I believe the older women have been underrepresented and their lives have a lot of wisdom for the younger generation to learn from. I believe that these women age like fine wine and their beauty needs to be shown. This project launches in March 2026.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My Dad.
My dad is one of my biggest influences both in life and work. I saw him work hard and he always emphasized hard work. I have come to realize that success largely depends on hard work. Of course there are other factors that can lead to success, but you’d hardly find someone successful that did not put in the work.
From my early childhood my dad taught me to work and to be diligent. He always reminded me of the proverbial ant who has no leader but works hard in the summer and reaps fruits in the right season. Well, I didn’t listen because I’m not an ant, or it didn’t make sense to me at the time.
But growing up I have remembered and applied all he taught me about work and having a brilliant work ethic and I am reaping the benefits.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Be brave and be disciplined
I heard the quote that said fortune favours the brave. I would need my younger self to take bold steps. You either win or you learn. It’s important to fail fast so that you can learn early and avoid mistakes in the future. But before these mistakes could be made, my younger self has to take steps.
Secondly, I have come to learn that discipline will take a person far. Discipline is doing what is necessary whether or not I feel like it. Doing the right things at the right time time regardless of how I feel about it at the time. I would need my younger self to be disciplined enough to do all that is necessary for success.
The most successful people in life have “hacked” discipline and they are brave enough to take daring steps regardless of what the outcome will be.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is the real me, but the problem is there are different sides to me.
I used to be very extroverted. I was the class clown, I even had a brief career spell as a comedian and event host. So that hyperactive personality is what most people knew about me. Some things happened in my life and then that personality was shielded, I became introverted, kept to myself, hardly associating with people.
However, when the occasion called for it, that hyperactive, eccentric personality would show up. So now I have a mix of both personalities.
One time I hosted a show in my city and it was “lit” a few months later some people from that show saw me and they came to say hi. There was a lot of excitement from their end, but I was calm and chill that day and they kept asking me “is everything okay? are you fine? are you hurt?” Initially I was worried that they thought so, but I later realized they had not seen the calm version of me, so because I was not hyped as when they first met me, it felt like something was off.
The public version of me is the real me. There are just many different sides to me.
Having these different sides to me also helps me interact with my clients more. When I get a read of them I know if I should be serious, calm, hyped or funny.
All of these attributes make up the real me.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
With my background as an event host and a comedian I have learned to make people happy and laugh, I have transposited this into my career as a photographer. And so I believe that if I retire today, the warmth, laughter, jokes are the things my customers will miss the most, because it helps them express their best self and lighten up the mood while shooting their portraits.
