Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Qortez Brown

We recently had the chance to connect with Qortez Brown and have shared our conversation below.

Qortez, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Who are you learning from right now?
I am learning from myself right now. In which I am learning how to be “patient” being patient is something I don’t think is really talked about in life. We always talk about grinding, grinding, and grinding. What about the times of being patient during that grind while trying to reach a common goal!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Qortez Brown I am a basketball coach as well as skills development trainer. What makes my job special is that I can see the growth of athletes on and off the court. When I first told myself I wanted to coach I wanted to coach for two reasons: inspire others to be great. I also wanted to coach to help people get to their desired level of success within the sport of basketball. I am also a first generation college graduate. I am currently working on my Masters Of Social Work from Madonna University.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
Who taught me most about work was my mother and my high school basketball coach. My mother raised me by herself and made sure I was always reaching certain goals in school and on the court. My mother taught me that you never give up when a task is very hard. My high school coach Brandon Peoples has played a huge role in my life. As I started to learn myself I learned at an early age basketball was my thing. However I wasn’t the most skilled, but I always worked hard on certain drills and things to improve my game. My high school basketball coach always used to say ” On a task on a mission “. Which sits with me till this day as I start to learn myself throughout my journey of coaching. As I coach and live everyday I tell myself ” I am on a task and on a mission”

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
I stop hiding my pain and start using it as power when I was younger in my teenage years. I would often wonder why certain things in my life would be like that. Once I got older I learned that this is my motivation to be great to once inpsire that next upcoming young man that want to be great. Let alone to share my story. Growing up I would wonder why my father wasn’t active in my life ,but however this was my fuel to success.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
‘KEEP GOING STORM DON’T LAST FOREVER” – Jordan Wcycoff ( Former College Basketball Player & Current Coach)

“YOUR TIME IS COMING” -Trey Allen ( Entrepreneur & Close Friend )

‘KEEP WORKING BRO IT’S GOD TIMING” -(Taylor Jones Professional Basketball Player/ Close Friend )

These words mean the world to me as I continue to grind for what I want daily in this game and in life.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes I could growing up on the Eastside of Detroit praise is not often the “norm” the grit and grind is the norm!
