Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Rhí McPhelim of Ireland

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rhí McPhelim. Check out our conversation below.

Rhí, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Who are you learning from right now?
This year I started a new role with another Irish PR company (Amplify Agency) which has been amazing, so I’m learning from their brilliant MD, Sheena Madden. It’s been fantastic to learn from one of the best in the business!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Rhí (short for Rhíona) and I’m a music publicist from Ireland. I started my own company, Cobra Promotions, in 2020, during the first COVID lockdown in Ireland, because I wanted to explore the PR side of the music industry. I started the business at 18 with no ties in the music industry and zero knowledge of PR, and I’m now working with an amazing roster of clients in the rock and roots genres.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Not so much a powerful moment, but a proud one – and it’s only quite recently! – was when in the past year, I was at a conference and I recognized a person from the industry who I had spoken with only a few times over social media, and I went up to briefly say hello and introduce myself. I quickly said something like “I’m the one who does Cobra Promotions” and she held my arm and her mouth dropped and she went, “that’s you!? You’re doing amazing…..” and that was such a lovely moment.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Stop worrying!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
Probably working hard and making something out of myself, I hope!

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
In the evenings, between 8 and 9pm, with a cup of tea and a cat by my side.
