We’re looking forward to introducing you to Rickie B.. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Rickie , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
My children make me laugh all the time. It’s crazy looking at where I am now, 32 years old, a wife and two beautiful kids & a business owner, I couldn’t be more proud of what God has blessed me with. So yea, every day is a proud moment for me. Even when the times are trying and hard, I always tell myself, I’d rather be here right now than where I was at.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
For starters, I’m a music artist producer and engineer. My brand and what makes it unique is that it is connected to purpose. If you are finding a purpose or are operating within your purpose, then you can strongly identify yourself within the brand that is Rickie B.! The stories and the messages within the music and the integrity within the music is something that is missing in this current day and age ESPECIALLY in the music industry. Because it’s so rare that someone is bold enough to talk about what they believe in, to a room full of people or an audience that isn’t use to hearing it and isn’t expecting to hear and see that is what makes me special. I’m walking in my purpose and I let nothing stop me from doing that. So if you’re that type of person… then you are essentially apart of the brand.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
So as a kid, I knew this world was crazy due to all the wars in the Middle East and events like 9/11. Even at home, I saw in my own neighborhood how messed up things were so I already had a sense of that aspect of cruelty and unfairness. Specifically though, my Junior year of high school, right after I had the best football game of my life there was a moment that shaped it all for me.
It was the off season & I was training for the upcoming year. There was a kid in middle school that saw me and my buddy Adrian working out on the field (shout out to him by the way). This kid watching us practice had told me he knew I was gonna be in the NFL and wanted my autograph before I got famous because it would be “worth more” once I got there. But, when he asked me, how I stayed focused and was asking me for life advice, in that instance, I knew I wanted to use my platform to inspire the lives of others and to help people out. Fast forward to now, even though I never got close to the NFL, I use that mindset in everything I do. I know that everyone is on their own journey, and that we all need help at some point. All in all, my view of the world was shaped then because I saw how easily people can be influenced and how the wrong person could lead millions to fall. I didn’t want to be apart of that. I wanted to be the one that even if it was just my kids, they could carry out my mission to help build the world to become a better place.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Many times, I’ve contemplated just stopping and giving up. You know as humans we see ourselves in one place and then life be lifing and you don’t get where you think you should be. Then you get discouraged and all that. But when you know your purpose and who you are in God and in Christ, you start to understand things differently and you snap out of it. But I can’t give up though, because if I give up, there’s a ton of legacies and wealthy people and empires that will never be built per my lack of influence. So yea… Giving up is not an option. Not at all.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
There’s this lie now about how artists gotta have a big following already in order to be considered marketable and considered good enough & to be considered an artist that’s worthy to be signed. Like if you don’t have a big following they won’t look your direction. Like your following is the bases for your talent. And that couldn’t be further from the truth. In the 80s and 90s you heard about a person or a group, brought them in for their talent and then the labels would utilize their power to get them their fan base. Now it’s the opposite, where people have a lot of followers on social media and have no talent so they don’t last long in the industry. But yea, to those that know they got it and just need the following, you are still worth it. We just gotta learn how to play the game since the labels want to make us do the brunt of the work when it comes to that.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I don’t think anyone will misunderstand anything about my legacy if they’re tapped in to what I’m doing. I believe that once you listen to the music and understand what I’m about, it’ll be easy to see what I’m doing in this game. The work speaks for itself, you just gotta tap in.
