Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sam Kiste of Grand Rapids, MI

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sam Kiste. Check out our conversation below.

Sam, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Family. I have four wonderful children and an amazing wife who inspire me every day to be a better version of myself. This past year, I’ve focused not only on growing my business but also on strengthening the bond that holds my family together. Everything I do—professionally and personally—is driven by my desire to create a life for them that they truly deserve.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sam Kiste, and I’m the owner and lead videographer of SJK Productions, a full-service video production company specializing in weddings and commercial storytelling. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of filming hundreds of weddings and partnering with businesses to create cinematic, emotionally driven films that capture who they truly are.

What sets SJK Productions apart is our focus on authenticity and storytelling. Every project—whether it’s a couple’s wedding day or a brand’s promotional film—is approached with the same goal: to create something real, meaningful, and visually powerful. I’m passionate about using film to connect people to emotion and purpose, and that’s what continues to drive everything I do.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My wife, Hannah. We met when I was 18, and she’s been the person who’s believed in me from the very beginning. She saw potential in me long before I did and pushed me to chase success, even when I doubted myself. Every milestone I’ve reached—both personally and professionally—has her support woven into it. She’s been my biggest motivator, my grounding force, and the reason I continue to grow into the person she always saw in me.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I think every entrepreneur has moments where they almost give up. Building something from the ground up comes with constant challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. But the truth is, the difference between those who make it and those who don’t isn’t talent or luck—it’s perseverance.

The most successful entrepreneurs are the ones who push through that urge to quit. They don’t expect success to be handed to them; they fight for it, day after day. I’ve learned that every barrier, every obstacle, is an opportunity to grow stronger. Those tough moments are what shape you—and pushing through them is what defines true success.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That art alone is enough.

In the video world—especially in wedding and commercial production—there’s this belief that if you’re creative enough, success will naturally follow. But that’s just not true. Creativity is important, but running a successful video business takes so much more: discipline, business strategy, client relationships, marketing, and consistency.

Many talented creatives struggle because they underestimate the business side of what we do. The truth is, you can be the most gifted filmmaker in the world, but if you don’t know how to communicate your value, deliver an exceptional client experience, and operate like a professional—you’ll never reach your full potential. It’s not just about making art; it’s about building something sustainable.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I’m absolutely doing what I was born to do. I’ve been creating videos since before I was 10 years old—filming, editing, and experimenting with storytelling long before I ever realized it could become a career. I took video classes all through high school, went to college for it, and now I’m fortunate enough to do it professionally every single day.

Video has been a constant in my life for as long as I can remember. I’ve always had the love and support to chase it fully, and I’m grateful that what started as a childhood passion has grown into a successful, lifelong career.
