We’re looking forward to introducing you to Sarah Lewis. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I love to check out new cities, go to Pilates, and hangout with my pup!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sarah of Slate and Brush Design Studio. I’ve been a full time artist for 5 years now, but before that I went to school for Fashion Design and was a costume designer at the biggest Halloween company. I made the switch during Covid when I realized I wasn’t happy at my job/where I was in life. It was a huge leap of faith, but it paid off!
Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’ve always been creative – the art room at school was my mental break each day and where I felt most comfortable. At one point I thought that it was “wrong” to want to be an artist (the starving artist cliché) and I tried to fit the mold of doing something more practical. Turns out, when you try to change who you are on the inside, your outside world will be miserable. So I had to find myself again and embrace the creative, non-linear side.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh all the time! There are a lot of highs and lows with owning your own business and there were endless late nights where I was crying to myself, overworked and overstressed and questioning if I should just get a regular corporate job because it would be easy. But, if owning a business was easy, then everyone would do it. The key is to understand that the low point is a season and not a permanent reality.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
I think I present a little more polished version of me online. In reality, I’m a huge goof who is always trying to make my friends and family laugh. I like to show a little of that playfulness, but it’s definitely a lot more in person.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I think they would miss my personal touch on designs. I like to think outside of the box and create more unique pieces, which not every artist does. I become friends with a lot of my clients because they’re very similar to me, and I think that’s one of my core brand values. I treat my clients like how I would like to be treated.
