We’re looking forward to introducing you to Shanan Campanaro. Check out our conversation below.
Shanan, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
Its so nice becaseu we have finished out renovations in Califrononia and we live in Encinitas now so we can get up every morning and go surfing before work! We get up, we go surfing – my husband and I and then we get coffee at our favorite coffee shop Rose Hill. Then we go to our new Studio in Down town Encinitas. We work most of the day. We have a couple clients meetings a day and I work on marketing and design and my husband works on sales. We go to yoga in the late afternoon a few times a week and then we usually go out to dinner. When we get home we see my family since we live on the same property as my parents.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
A textile design studio where nature comes first
Since launching Eskayel in 2008, we’ve combined creativity with care to produce highly customizable made-to-order wallpaper, fabrics, hand-knotted rugs, pillows, and frame-ready prints.
Preserving the planet underpins everything we do, so we use natural materials like water-based pigment inks and sustainable fibers that won’t hurt you or the environment.
We work exclusively with trusted, transparent production partners and make all of our goods to order to eliminate stock waste. Our fabrics, wallpapers, pillows, and art prints are produced in the US to reduce the environmental impact of shipping.
Each original design in our collection is based on a painting by our founder and creative director Shanan Campanaro. Over 17 years, our archive of over 800 enduring patterns has stood the test of time and trends to champion the beauty of the planet we call home.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I think lack of understanding and unwillingness to question and engage in discourse ( which leads to lack of understanding) is a huge cause of people feeling a disconnectedness with one another. to restore these bonds we could use a lot more acceptance for other peoples opinions and states of mind.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I think that intense feelings of loneliness which I experiences early on when I was young and when I was in my 20’s really taught me to rely on myself for happiness and not other people. I think its a really important lesson to learn that you are the one responsible for yourself, your choices and your attitude ultimately.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yeah I am pretty sure it is… being authentic is really important and it’s really appreciated. Not everybody is going to love you for you but by presenting yourself authentically at least you know that the people who do love you love the real you.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I think a lot of people are set in their ways and opinions and dont feel open towards ideas or people that contradict their ways of thinking. Approaching all situations with an openness and a curiosity helps truths be revealed that might not be what you expect. you never know what that person who cut you off while driving might be going through, they could be pregnant and in labor trying to get the hospital. imagination is so much more valuable than judgment. things are never what they seem to be.
