Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with SOUFSIDE KATHLEEN

We’re looking forward to introducing you to SOUFSIDE KATHLEEN. Check out our conversation below.

SOUFSIDE, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Who are you learning from right now?
I have been trying to put myself in a more of a student position, so I’m learning from a few people based on certain things in my life that needs more attention or consistent development. When it comes to craft, I’m learning from Stephen King, Guillermo Del Toro, Mike Flanagan, Kendrick Lamar. I know it sounds very scattered, but they all are great storytellers and that is the path I want to stay on. I think when it comes to my emotional and mental well-being, I listen to a lot of Mel Robbins and Dr. Joe Dispenza. Learning about rewiring the brain and being more centered than reactionary keeps me grounded on the path I need to be on. But I’m also learning a lot from my past actions, I can definitely say the older version of myself is teaching me a lot right now.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m SOUFSIDE KATHLEEN, I make music that’s mostly centered around rap and hip hop. Although, I have had the opportunity to write for some singers. I have released two full projects, and I recently dropped an EP this year. Right now, my main focus is releasing more music and connecting more with my audience. I have a streetwear brand, that I will be announcing in the beginning of next year, so I’m excited for that.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Everybody, and the social construct. In the community I was raised in we see parents working multiple jobs and still barely make ends meet. In my early life, that’s all I saw. I move out to LA for school and once I start being around more creative people, I am able to see people’s life change over working smarter not harder. Some people that have incredible work ethic and I can see the blessings from it, and others no work ethic, but generational money ha So, work to me is very complex. One valuable thing that I have learned about work is, I can make a living off of doing what I want to do, but this isn’t generational so I’m going to have to work harder and smarter. The word alone feels like an oxymoron to me, I’m “working” at becoming something great and those growing pains can feel like work, but the goal is to never make it feel like I have to go back to “work” again, ya know?

When did you last change your mind about something important?
Working on my streetwear brand there was a name that I had for years, it just always clinged to me. It was very important to me at the time. Now, my life has shifted and my thoughts on the name have changed. The name itself still holds value but making the last-minute name change was a bit difficult to sit with. It reminded of this interview of when Tyler the Creator said don’t hold on your ideas for too long because what could have meant a lot to you can lose its purpose when your life starts to change.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Absolutely. Being in mostly music dominated spaces, it’s very cringe to see people that are different online compared to who they are in person. My music expresses real life experiences and being that honest is pivotal to me as an artist, so I can never present myself as something I’m not or show off things that I don’t have or isn’t real. There’s isn’t a separation from rap artist to individual. I move as the same person.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
If you can sit and vision the life that you want, then it’s attainable.
