Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sterling of Wilderness

Sterling shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Sterling , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I spend much of my free time outside of work in the deep woods of the Mount Shasta wilderness. Just North of the Castle Crags, a snow-melt river flows through rocky hills in the forest. The clear, cool river has many majestic, natural pools surrounded by large, smooth boulders. I find joy in napping on the warm surface of a stone at my favorite swimming hole. It’s a majestic place of solitude deep in the forest and I enjoy every minute of it as often as I can.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Sterling and I’m here to write my journey of self-discovery and share it with the world. I started with children’s books then moved to screenplays. I’ve planted a few trees along the way and found joy in the smiles of my readers. I love to make people laugh and I want to show people they can believe in themselves, even if they don’t believe in me.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mother has always seen me for who I really am. It never bothered her there were times I wore a mask. She embraced the weird and found joy in my journey of self discovery.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Judgement. I have been held back by the fear of judgement. Many people don’t believe in me. Others believe I’m something that I’m not. They think I’m some sort of ape. It’s offensive. I’m not an ape!

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would say it’s the forest that matters to me most. I love the solitude and the peace you find in the wilderness. I love to hear the wind whisper. She sings like a breeze. A timeless melody.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
It is my hope the people will say that I was a difference maker, a lover, a fighter. It is my hope they say I was real, that I am real and that I’ll always be there, protecting the forest and all the creatures that dwell there.
