We’re looking forward to introducing you to theRave. Check out our conversation below.
theRave, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
These days, I keep it simple and pretty regimented. It’s nothing fancy. I wake up, brush my teeth, put on my clothes, drink some green tea, and go to the gym to work out. If you were asking me this question last year, it would’ve been wake up, brush teeth, record the album.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Well, to put it simply, I’m a musician. By next year I’ll be the first and only independent artist to record and release a double album with lyric and music videos for each track. That album will be “The Infatuation League”.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My last relationship is pretty pivotal in terms of changing how I see myself, who I want to be, and how I want to live and even be a part of the world at large. It gave me the means and the safe space to ask myself some serious questions that I’ve been avoiding for so long. In doing so, I was able to get a deeper understanding about myself, but of course other questions arose.
I think the most important change was that when I met this person, I didn’t believe love was real or that it even existed. That’s entirely what “The Infatuation League” is about; the belief that there is no such thing as love, only different forms of infatuation. Well, I can now say that I don’t agree with that statement at all. And while I don’t agree with the overall conceptual theme of this album that I’m now releasing, I think it’s a wonderful snapshot into my mind at the time. If anything, it makes me all the more grateful for the journey that led me to who and how I am today.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
Ultimately, I think Spells and Curses was a trauma response to a really dark point in my life. I was trying to ascribe meaning to a lot of pain I was feeling, while also making sense of a new life that I was now having to live. Loss can have that effect on you, I suppose. Since recording and releasing music at that time, I’ve been able to connect with a lot of people who have been able to share their stories with me; they’d tell me how my music helped them through their own dark moments. And while I’d hate to say my music is therapeutic to make, I do feel that there is a catharsis to be had when it’s all said and done for me.
That being said, I also don’t think that Spells and Curses is just gonna be “this”. I feel like I’ve been focusing a lot on the ‘curses’ side of things, and not so much on the ‘spells’, if you know what I mean.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I suppose the biggest lie the industry tells itself is that it is real, and that it is open to everyone. Ultimately, and depending on what your goals are, it’s really not. It’s all smoking mirrors, and it’s owned by a few millionaires looking to push content onto you. The music industry is now social media, and social media is now the home shopping network. Yes, everyone may have a chance, but that’s also the Catch-22, everyone has a chance. The value of your ticket has diminished by that much now. That’s why I think that more than ever, it’s important for artists to change their relationship with art and even their expectations from art.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If immortality were real, what would you build?
I think I’m building it now and will continue building it till the day I drop. It’s my music… my catalog. “The Infatuation League” is just another stake in my claim on the hill that I’ll die on; it’s the one that proves that I am one of the better songwriters of my generation.
