Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Tyler Gilbert

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Tyler Gilbert. Check out our conversation below.

Tyler, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
I have noticed there is a great misconception about what it is like as a touring artist. People, especially new musicians have this vision that life on the road is nothing but fun, but in reality it has more lows then actual highs. From sleeping in unusual places to van break downs, bad venues, rough crowds and bad turn outs. Touring is not all its cracked up to be, but dont get me wrong the moments of greatness are a wonderful thing.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tyler Gilbert, I am a hard rock recording artist based out of Las Vegas, NV. Since 2003 I have released 8 albums and have toured all across United States and Canada, performing at festivals and shows of all types. Over the past few years I have cut back on touring and focused primarily on releasing albums.

The interesting part of my career is the transitioning of different genres my music has lived. I started out with a Southern rock sound and then transitioned into more of a folk, singer/songwriter style, then to a more modern rock sound, then to hard rock and currently metal. That brings be to what I am currently working on, my upcoming album titled “Monster” it is a collection of 14 tracks within the heavy metal genre. Mixed and mastered by Tristan Hardin(Five Finger Death Punch, Disturbed, Slipknot) of Hideout Recording Studio in Henderson, NV, the album features top tier musicians including Mike Young (Mother Mother) and Chris Dimas (Bleeker). The first single “Bunker” features Daniel O’Grady of Dead Label, which comes out August 11 on all streaming platforms.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I would say the first time I performed live, stepping up to the mic and belting out everything I had. The way the audience responded to my voice which as growing up a shy kid, this made me feel special and powerful. That I could sing in a way that impressed people, that meant the world to me, I finally had a way to express what my shy self couldn’t.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self, do more. I worked very hard to become a musician and make music, tour, promote and build a fan base, but I see now there was always more I could have done. With the insane level of drive I had then, I only wish I would have maybe not taken a break here or relaxed a little less and just done more. Now as I get older I feel more fears then I had when I was younger, maybe play things a little more safe and have a little less drive, which is why I would say to my younger self do more. Go big or go home.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes I am pretty much the same person all time, a quirky, humorous weirdo. I like to make people laugh, I like to embrace my strangeness, which I feel this humorous side comes out on stage easily. However I don’t think this part of me comes out in my music, my lyrics and songs are much more serious.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I am sitting outside late at night, with my favorite music cranked and a nice cold beer in my hand looking up at the stars. I find this setting very peaceful and serene. I believe in this moment, life doesn’t get any better.
