Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Yeins Gomez of Greenville

Yeins Gomez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Yeins, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
For me, integrity comes first. In tattooing, everything relies on trust, people are literally giving you their skin and often their most personal stories.
Without integrity, nothing else holds up.
Intelligence and energy are essential to grow as an artist, to plan large-scale projects, and to get through long sessions, but without integrity there’s no real connection and no honest result. In the end, I believe a great tattoo is born not only from technique, but from the ethics behind the work.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Yeins Gomez. I’m a Cuban artist who came to the United States in 2015. I originally studied metal sculpture and later graduated from university with a degree in Restoration of metal and stone monuments. Sculpture has been part of my life and work since 2006, and it continues to influence everything I do today.

About four years ago, I began tattooing, and it quickly became another powerful way to express the same artistic vision I developed through sculpture. I now specialize in large-scale black and gray realism, full sleeves and detailed custom pieces that allow me to explore depth, form, and storytelling on a different kind of canvas: the human body.

What makes my work unique is the way my background in sculpture shapes the way I approach composition, anatomy, volume, and texture. Each tattoo is a piece of art built with intention, designed to feel powerful, balanced, and emotionally meaningful.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was a quiet kid in Cuba who split his time between drawing and playing basketball. I didn’t think about expectations, I just followed whatever made me feel alive.

What truly shaped me was the constant love and support of my family. They made me believe that creating was not just something I enjoyed, but something worth pursuing.

At my core, I’m still that same kid, someone who creates because it’s the most honest way I know to understand myself and the world.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Believe

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect at all costs is my sense of identity as a Cuban. It’s in the small things, drinking strong coffee, dancing salsa, getting lost in Latin jazz, and in the deep emotion I feel every time I see a Cuban flag. Those things ground me, remind me where I come from, and keep me connected to my roots no matter where I am.

But I also carry the values that, in many ways, have been lost or challenged in Cuba: honesty, genuine hospitality, and the way Cubans used to take care of each other like family. I try to protect those values in my life and in my work, because they reflect the best of who we are.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace in the early mornings, just sitting in the backyard with my wife and my son, drinking my coffee.

It’s simple, but that moment of calm with them before the day really starts, means everything to me. It’s where I reset and feel completely grounded.
