We recently had the chance to connect with Ying Yi and have shared our conversation below.
Ying , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
We won First Place in the Houston Community College Business Plan Competition and were awarded $12,000! 🎉
It’s an extremely competitive program with six workshops leading up to the final pitch, and I was fortunate to have an amazing mentor guiding me through the journey.
I’m proud of myself — not just for winning first place, but for being open, humble, and always ready to learn from others. 💛
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a physics professor who loves a life filled with love, passion, and meaningful connections. I appreciate the simple joys — the food I cook, the friends I share my passions with, my loving husband, and my sweet little boy.
Every morning, I start my day by making a beautiful latte art for my husband and myself. I love creating healthy, delicious meals, and I love to dance.
That joy in movement is what inspired me to create MY Knitever: comfortable, beautiful, and sustainable dresses that make people want to dance through their day.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
No matter whether it’s my work as a professor or as the CEO of MY Knitever, the person who taught me the most about work was my very first colleague, Chad. I still remember asking him how to be a good professor when I started my first job. He told me the most important thing was to memorize my students’ names.
That simple advice taught me a powerful lesson: people are the most important part of any work we do.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering teaches us in ways success never can. It forces reflection, strengthens our resilience, and helps us grow into better versions of ourselves. Success, on the other hand, gives me the courage to keep going. Having both — the struggle and the triumph — creates the balance we need to move forward with wisdom and confidence.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
The biggest lie in the fashion industry is the illusion that we constantly need more. In reality, we don’t need more clothing — we need the right clothing. High-quality pieces that fit well, feel comfortable, and truly serve us. Less is more — and it’s better for both us and the environment.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
What I’m doing today may not fully pay off for another 7–10 years, and that’s okay — because I’m part of the pioneers reshaping the fashion industry. We’re building a future where custom fit, sustainability, and technology come together. Real change takes time, but it’s worth it.
