Lindsey Taylor shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Lindsey, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
Oh gosh, so many things! I feel like I’ve finally entered a season of releasing the impostor syndrome that’s held me back for so long. I’ve started to challenge myself in different ways… primarily putting myself out there on social media in a way I’ve never done before. I’m saying yes to opportunities I would’ve once turned down out of fear of failing. It’s scary, but also kind of exciting to see what’s possible when I stop standing in my own way.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the owner and designer behind L.TaylorDesignCo. I started creating about eight years ago, and my journey since then has been anything but linear. I’ve dabbled in everything from branding and graphic design to calligraphy, traditional watercolor and digital illustration. I joke that I have a bit of creative ADHD at times, but it’s led me to some incredible opportunities! Lately, I’ve found myself leaning more into digital watercolor and, slightly full circle, back into the wedding space where I originally started.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I grew up with a very specific view of myself and what I could do… I was introverted, overweight and very afraid to put myself out there. The combination of those three things led to other people telling me what I could and couldn’t do, and who I was physically and emotionally. It took years of effort and rewiring, but now I’m a very strong believer that you can be anything you want to be with some drive and effort. I was absolutely horrible at calligraphy until I practiced 24/7 for months and months, same with digital watercolor. People tell me all of the time they can’t create what I can create, but neither could I until I tried, and then tried again. One of my goals is to be able to teach what I do, so I can help be the reason why someone feels like they can instead of can’t.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh, I’ve given up more times than I can count, but thankfully, I’ve started again just as many times. There are definitely times when I am hard on myself for giving up or pivoting, but I’ve realized that I wasn’t in the right place with myself to follow through with those things. I needed to work on myself before I could ever be the person I needed to be in that moment.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I’ve been really lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends over the years, but no one has been more involved along the way than my sister. She’s a creative powerhouse in her own right and has been my sounding board for just about every idea I’ve had since I was born. Honestly, she’s been the silent (and unpaid!) employee behind every business idea I’ve dreamed up. Her belief in me, especially during the times I didn’t believe in myself, has been a huge reason why I’ve kept going and continued to believe in myself.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What will you regret not doing?
Trying. I think about it all the time, what I’ll regret most when I’m 80 years old. And it’s always the same answer….Not giving it my all. And not just in my career, but also in my marriage, my family, my relationships and my health. When I look back on my life, I want to know I showed up fully and that I gave it everything I had, right up until the very last second. That doesn’t mean burning myself out or hustling nonstop. It’s actually the opposite. It means being intentional in everything I do. And hopefully, I will be proud of what I leave behind.
