Lisa D’Amico of New York on Life, Lessons & Legacy

Lisa D’Amico shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Lisa, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Who are you learning from right now?
I’ve learned that one of the best ways to grow as an artist is by learning from other artists. Watching how they approach their work, solve creative problems, and express their ideas often gives me motivation for my own process. Conversations and collaborations also open my mind to different techniques and ways of seeing. Most exchanges, whether big or small, help me expand my artistic language and stay inspired.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My artistic journey began in New York. It was there that I became grounded in the visual arts and developed a deep connection to my surroundings. My work reflects experiences and observations translated into visual form, inspired by the beauty of nature, the human form, and the interplay of color.

For over twenty years, my art has been consistently exhibited and honored with multiple accolades, including the Visual Artist of the Year Award from the Arts Council of Rockland and the Weir Masterpiece Award from the National Parks Service. Dedicated to both the arts and education, I serve as the curator at The Art Gallery at Rockefeller State Park Preserve, I founded the Bluefield Arts Festival, and I have over twenty years of experience as a certified art teacher and published writer.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
My first visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a teenager with my uncle, sister, and cousins was life-changing. I had never stepped inside an art museum before, and walking through those vast galleries opened my eyes to the power of human expression. The diversity of perspective, technique, and imagination in the artwork across centuries made me realize how art connects people through time and experience. That day awakened something in me, a deep conviction to create, to communicate through images, and to leave my own visual mark on the world.

Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
In my youth, my sanctuary was school. It was there that I felt truly seen and heard, especially by teachers and professors like Page Simon and Susan Leshnoff, whose guidance shaped both my confidence and my craft. There were times when they believed in me more than I believed in myself, and their encouragement helped me discover the courage to pursue art as both a passion and a lifelong journey.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
My art often develops into a series of multiple works connected by a central theme, I am currently working on a series inspired by the classical elements of fire, water, earth, and air. My lifelong project, The Sonic Heroines series was born from my desire to share the visual stories of women through unconventional portraits. Every woman has a story that deserves to be heard and honored, yet too many have been silenced for far too long. My art series challenges traditional portraiture and amplify the voices of remarkable women, both past and present on a local and global scale.

Through these interconnected series, my work seeks to ignite dialogue, celebrate resilience, and transform silence into powerful visual storytelling.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
Yes, I was born an artist. I have been drawing and painting since I could hold a crayon. Creating art has always been my truest form of expression and the lens through which I experience the world.
