Lutin Karau on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Lutin Karau and have shared our conversation below.

Lutin, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
As a comic artist, my job is coated in mystic and magic. It’s impossible to know how much time and effort is put into a single panel, chapter, webtoon episode, writing… until you actually try it yourself. And there’s also the hard times in between projects, when you search for financial help or an editor and that’s NOT PRETTY! I though, after publishing by myself one comic I could finally find the strenght to work on my next project (I said I wanted an editor/publisher last year, heh) but as it did not work, I changed for a less demanding project in 2025.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello !
I’m Lutin Karau, I’m a comic artist and I’m out here talling stories with sequencial images. I’ve always loved animation and manga and telling stories with images always fascinates me. I’m the Author of Songe of the River (Le Chant de la Rivière, in French).
This year 2025 I worked on and published Life As My Horse (https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/life-as-my-horse/list?title_no=1046314 ) (Réincarnée dans mon cheval, in french). I’m also a History lover and love to share the less known people of the past so i drew many historical figures like Olympe de Gouge, Théroigne de mericourt, Claire Lacombe, Hatchepsout, Lili Elbe… in a serie I call “Historical Queers”.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
It’s not the first, but it’s the first recent one. Publishing The Song of the River was a W to be. I whoose this comic to be my magnum opus and when I show it as exhibitions and selling it is a fantastic experience. People love my cover art, the gold, the rigid cover… A very fancy book meant to impress and it worked.

Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
The times of COVID-19 really shaped my current self. I started so many projects thanks to the time I had away from my day job. I started loads of projects and only finished one. It’s this one finished project that helped me publish my next books. Now… I have a very hard project to handle for 2026.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
References. My friends know when I have an idea, I start searching for documentation and I love to gather info about subjects so I can add personnality to my projects. I hate the conventionnal, I want everything to be unique but based on different culture.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Self publishing my comics is something that will never pay off financially, and I’ll probably hate my work in 10 years. It’s hard to be an author !
