We’re looking forward to introducing you to Makayla George. Check out our conversation below.
Makayla, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
My film “The Car Salesman” recently got selected to be screened at the Women’s Film Festival in Philadelphia, so I’m super proud of that!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Yes! Hi, my name is Makayla M. George, I am a screenwriter, director, and producer based in Houston, Texas. I just graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in English and minor in Creative Writing. I have an independent film company called 4:25 Films (F.K.A. MakGeo Studios). I went for the name change because I wanted something with a nicer ring to it and was easier for others to remember. I’m always down for a rebrand!
Currently, I’m working on a five features, trying to get the short films I have produced, and collaborate with other Houston filmmakers. So far, I have one short film in post production and another one in pre-production that I was a writer on called “Still Watching”! Super excited for that one! I’m also trying to make more connections out in L.A. and New York because I plan to move out to one of them one day for film and T.V. writing. Moreover, I’m currently taking acting classes, so you might see me on your screen one day!
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I would have to say my dad saw me before I could see myself because he saw that I had the potential to be a writer at a young age. He already knew I was smart and talented and he would say anything I touched or tried out would turn to gold meaning I was good at whatever I put my mind to. I love how he instilled that in me and still continues to remind me of how talented I am when I feel discouraged about something. I believe my mom and grandma saw something special in me also. So, I thank God for all of them!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would say to live your life the way you want and not care what anyone thinks. It probably sounds cliche, but growing up an only child, you live a life where you’re trying to please your parents doing what they want you to do, not knowing that it’s going to hurt you in the long run. So, all in all, I’d say, “It’s your life, baby! Live it with no fear!”
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Being in spaces where you are appreciated, valued, and seen. I say that because I was in a place where I did not feel those things even with the people I called my “friends”. So, every time I join a new group or make a new friend, I look for at least one of those characteristics.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
Hmm, I would build a legacy making sure my great great great grandchildren are set for life. Moreover, I’d have different businesses; a film company, architecture firm to build houses/buildings all over the world. Then, I would continue to give back to communities, internationally; I would love to be known as one of the greatest philanthropist! All of this could still be done with mortality, but having enough time to do it would be amazing.
