We’re looking forward to introducing you to Mark Gray. Check out our conversation below.
Mark, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What are you chasing, and what would happen if you stopped?
Im chasing after God’s heart. In 2021 I lost my son Markquett “Lil Mark” Gray Martin, the year after that I lost my best friend Quinton Myers, and the year after that my grandmother, Thelma Gray passed away. Also the loss of Michael Jackson played a part of me feeling like I’ve lost everything in the world. I stopped doing music, I stopped recording music, but God showed me something different and my purpose of being here on earth. God has always blessed me and I owe Him everything in me to give Him honor and praise.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mark Gray I go by Mystery in the music industry. I have been singing and doing music since I was six years old. My mother Lisa introduced me to Michael Jackson. My uncle Ronnie introduced me to R&B. My grandmother Thelma dressed me and taught me how to sing and my late uncle Kevin Gray taught me how to harmonize. But fast forward, im a music producer, actor, arranger, writer and many more things. Im the co-host of “The Back and Forth podcast show” with the host William “Dolla Billsko” Howell and co-host GetMo. Im also with a production company called “Mission Control Unit” with Dolla Billsko, Dre On The Track Boi, myself Mystery. There are also two other members Chris PM Jones and Feddie. I was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee out South, University Court, which we call it U.C. The projects taught me a lot and help made me the man I am today. We also are working on a documentary about my singing group called Unique Soul. I’ve been in two films and about to work on another film with my brother Wykeem Abduallah Talib from Heat level films. You guys need to check him out he write some great scripts.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
I was six years old when I heard this woman tell my grandmother that the spirit of God was with me and that I was going to be special. She might not remember that but I do and her name is Mrs. Gloria Burton. Mrs. Gloria gave me my first song to sing in church. I didn’t believe I could do it but I did it and she gave me so much confidence in myself even though im shy. I love Mrs. Gloria and forever will be appreciative of everything she has taught me. That’s why im always careful of what I do and say around people because you never know who is listening or watching you. Mrs. Gloria is want to give you your flowers in front of the world. She is a loving, caring woman and most of all a woman of God and I thank you.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. Several times. After my love ones kept on passing away I wanted to stop everything because I felt empty inside and felt like life was over. There is no set time for grieving, and some people don’t understand because some people haven’t lost a son, or a grandmother who was like my mother but after crying and I look up to the sky and remember God’s son Jesus was crucified, beating, spat on and many more things. That right there knowing what God’s son Jesus did for me is all the reason I have to keep going. And when Jesus returns to get all that are in Him, hopefully my love one, my family, and myself will be with Him and the father.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
For God I live, and for God I die. As long as I live, I will always serve and honor God. I promised Him and I gave my word that in whatever I do I will honor Him because without Him who am I… I work at making music for others, I also work at a hospital. Everything that I get paid from is a job but serving and doing what God ask of me is my life and love every bit of it because it’s pleasing to my father in heaven.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That i was truly after God’s heart and I loved my wife Trina Gray and my family but most importantly that I love God with everything in me. If people don’t remember my music or any nice thing that I’ve done, I want them to remember that I always try to show that the spirit of God lived in me.
