It all started early on in my life. I was taught when I was very young that communication was extremely important in everything I would do. The first and most important step I was taught was to listen. However, not just listen to the words that one said, but also to the words not said and the actions that lay within. There is so much wrapped up in effective listening and I don’t feel it’s something you can’t just learn from a book; It has to come from within. Caring enough to read between the lines and focus on key elements of one’s unspoken words, takes heart and dedication. As I said, I learned this early on and in my youth, so throughout my adulthood I have always received comments on how effective my communication was. I would say that since childhood, I have always been a very good listener, and that came from an environment where the authority of a room, be it a teacher or an elder family member, we had to just be quiet, which I know in today’s world is very different’. I guess from my experience it became a habit to listen and take instructions and carry it out. I am the eldest sibling and had to take charge in many situations from a young age, whether it was walking my brothers to school or making them a meal. I started out as a good listener. As I matured, I have become more conscious of my communication to make sure its understood. Growing up before there was electronic communication is definitely an advantage for me and I consistently remind our team the rules I live by. Face to face is the best way to communicate, since there is body language, facial expressions and tone of spoken word.
