Maureen Walsh’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

Maureen Walsh shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Maureen, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I normally wake up around 6am or so and move right into a mediation practice for about thirty minutes. I’ve found that if I practice before checking on my phone- then my whole day flows with greater ease and joy. After that I try to get in the water and surf for a couple hours depending on the season!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m an international visionary artist specializing in public art : murals, mixed media installations and textiles made with natural dyes. I’ve been working professionally as an artist since I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005 with a BFA in fibers. .

After graduating I moved to Brooklyn, NYC and worked many random jobs (retail, babysitting, artist assistant, freelance installation art + seamstress) before co-founding a design studio, in 2007 with a fellow SCAD graduate. The NYC chapter was a magical time filled with lots of excitement, elaborate creation + collaboration, party and the crazy hustle. Toward the end of my time in New York, I completed my first 200 yoga teacher training and started exploring different forms of meditation and alternative healing modalities.

After many years of fast paced living and wild nights out, I realized that it was time to begin the process of healing from the loss of my Mother (who passed away from brain cancer when I was 16). Starting that process laid the foundation for the untimely passing of my Father in 2013. After my Dad’s transition,I realized that life in the City would no longer work for me, so I went on a solo quest to explore different cultures and to search for a deeper meaning of life.

In the process I experienced many cultural celebrations, customs + philosophies on death. I studied several alternative healing modalities, yogic practices and art forms with master teachers around the globe. I also surfed many epic waves and formed a deep and nurturing relationship with the Ocean. My travels took me all over the world (for several years), through central + south America, parts of Europe, and across most of Asia.

In 2017, after receiving my 300 hour yoga certification, I spent eight months as the resident artist at a retreat center in Northern India. My time there opened up new pathways of creation and healing. During that time I painted my first three murals and wrote my first song. I didn’t have any background in painting or music but I was able to open my creative channel through the meditative practices I learned and through the vibration and magic of India.

When I returned to the states, my path started unfolding in new and unexpected ways. My life and work are inspired by all of my travels and cultural experiences.
Connecting to far- off people and places makes my heart and soul sing and it inspires my work. This connection is encoded into my work and my art and healing now flow + blend together. I infuse healing, intention and love into every piece of art that I create. And I use my visionary eye during healing sessions to help clients find lasting freedom + joy and their own unique expression in the world.

I’m inspired by travel, connection, freedom, expansion of consciousness, the magic + intricacy of nature, sacred geometry, music, ancient handicrafts + cultures, plant medicine and the healing power of the ocean. I currently reside on the North Shore of Oahu. While many places around the world feel like “home”, I’ve come to realize that the most important home will always be deep within my own heart.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, up until about ten years ago I held the belief that I couldn’t sing! I had an interesting experience in Church as a young girl that shaped that belief. It wasn’t until I began to go deep into my meditation practice and work with different plants that my voice opened. During my time in India, I opened a channel and started to write my own songs. Now it’s one of my favorite healing and creative outlets. I love working with clients that hold a similar belief- it’s amazing to watch that belief melt away as they find their own unique sound.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self not to take herself so seriously! To remember to have fun and create space for beauty and magic to enter her life. Everything always works out for the highest evolution of your soul and even when you feel like you’re dying- hang on and allow the redirection! Grief and sadness can lead to great beauty and magic if you feel the emotions and allow it to transform.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe that death is only a transition and that our loved ones that have crossed over are much closer than we think. I’ve had incredible experiences with clients, in dreams and in ceremonial spaces where I have seen and known this to be true. It happened most recently with a client that didn’t believe in energy work. It was a profoundly healing experience for both of us and it further grounded this belief within me. I can’t prove it in a tangible sense but I believe that we all have the ability to feel it.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I’m out surfing in the warm ocean, at one of my favorite spot, with friends. Another place that I feel most at peace is in a redwood forest, amongst the giant trees. I feel at peace anywhere out in nature where I can marvel at the beauty of this magnificent Earth!
