Max Hockley on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Max Hockley and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Max, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Wake up, turn on some news podcasts while I make coffee. I like the ritual of making coffee the old fashioned way, grinding my own beans, using a macchinetta. Then I check emails and answer YouTube comments while drinking it. Then I go out and exercise, usually rock climbing or tennis. Not a bad way to start the day!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have one of the coolest and most rewarding jobs in the world: I make YouTube videos teaching people about coin collecting and precious metals investing. It’s so fun getting to come up with creative ideas for videos and knowing that I’m going to help encourage people to get into one of the most rewarding hobbies of all time

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
I have a lot of influences about work and it’s hard to pick just one. I think my dad taught me a lot about responsibility, tenacity, and grit but my mom taught me about work ethic and attention to detail. Aside from my parents I have been lucky to have had many mentors in my professional life, ranging from the manager at the bar I worked at in college to my corporate supervisor when I worked in strategy consulting. The best you can do is to learn as much as you can from everyone you admire.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
FOMO. Fear of Missing Out. I think sometimes I can get distracted by less important things because I fear missing out on them. Maybe it would be better if I stayed more hyper-focused on a small number of things instead of going wide and trying to experience everything?

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. It’s the real me but with one main difference: I rarely talk politics on my YouTube channel. In my personal life I have very strong political opinions but I generally leave them out of my content. People come to watch me on YouTube, TikTok and Instagram to learn about coin collecting and precious metals investing–not to hear what I think about the war in Ukraine or abortion. I also think there is value keeping the channel “family friendly” so as many people as possible can benefit from my work

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What false labels are you still carrying?
I think in the world of social media there is always a feeling of “imposter syndrome,” where you feel like you don’t really belong and are not a REAL influencer or content creator. You look at other huge YouTube channels or celebrities and you think, “I’m not like them, I’m not good enough.” But the reality is, I have hundreds of thousands of fans and even if I’m not the biggest YouTuber on the planet, I certainly should be happy with what I’ve built.
