Meet DŽori

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DŽori. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Džori below.

DŽori, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I think this has come from me initially denying myself the ability to express my inner thoughts, emotions, and abilities. My beautiful partner urged me to show myself to the world, and my art is me doing that. The response to my work has been amazing, and that encourages me to do more.

As my website name suggests (fauviste.com), fauvism was and is my first love. I love focusing on color over form, and when in this mindset, I find there are endless possibilities to explore.

As an artist, I love experiencing new art and finding something new to try. Although my work may have started with fauvism, I always want to expand it. I love expressionism and messy abstract expressionism. I also love the minimalist, clean lines of editorial illustrations – particularly those by Malika Favre. She is amazing. These styles that have captured my attention are also constantly pushing me to try more things and expand my vision and capabilities.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am an artist, simple as that. I create all the time and share what I have drawn with the world. Through my art, I hope to express emotions, love, sensuality, fear, and other feelings.

A romantic at heart, I want to create art that conveys the emotions I feel or want to feel. I love fauvism, minimalistic illustrations, feminine form, and flirting with that edge of sensuality and mystery.

My stunning partner is often my inspiration. Her boldness gives me confidence.

I love fauvism and the female form. I frequently use fauvist elements in my work, favoring color over precision. I think it adds a fluidity to the work that is very real.

Illustrations help tell a story. The characters in my art are always engaged in a great story. There is always something thrilling going on in their lives.

When reviewing a commission request or brainstorming an idea, I generally get an idea of what I want to create, so I start to sketch.

As the sketch forms, I start thinking about colors and finishing details. I like my illustrations and works to pop. I want high contrast, creative use of negative space, and familiarity with the figure, where the audience starts to put together what the figure’s story might be.

Right now, I want to grow my brand. I would love to show my work somewhere and get illustration opportunities. That is truly a big dream of mine.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Show who you are. It took me a long time to do that. Thanks to therapy, a supportive family, and an amazing partner, I show who I am and am no longer afraid of that. When you can do this, I think you can focus more on your creativity and what makes you thrive.

2. Accept failure. Don’t quit just because you strike out at first. Keep going! You are worthwhile, and what you create and do is worthwhile.

3. Support Structure. Surround yourself with people that truly care about you. Don’t allow people to use you for their own good, but actually have your best interest in mind.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?

It might sound weird, but East of Eden by John Steinbeck is a monumental story following a family over several generations. It perfectly displays that life is hard, unfair, and beautiful and that living for a purpose is worthwhile. It’s a big book, so I don’t expect everyone to start reading it. But it is deep, and it will challenge you to live fully.
